NASA has just two Mars Sample Return mission lander options left

JPL's spy crane tech or private vendor to get $5-7 billion contract, before hitching lift back to Earth with ESA NASA says it needs until 2026 before making a final decision on how the Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission will work.…

@jaztrophysicist @sundogplanets Yes, JPL and all of the residential areas around it have been evacuated. They are now shutting down computer systems and transfering the Deep Space Network operations to their operations center at Goldstone.

Imagine for a minute that the CEO has fired all developers "because Devin".

Imagine the person tasked with using AI to add code knows diddly squat about coding so can't check the code.

The brave new world of all CEOs firing developers and replacing them with AI. 👇

“Meta abandons fact checking” and “Meta deploys fake AI-generated accounts to boost human engagement” were announced a countable number of hours apart, but for some reason people don’t think they’re the same story.

I stayed up too late working on risk assessments under the UK's Online Safety Act.

I am focussing on template (i.e. sample) risk assessments and indicative compliance measures for a range of theoretical small services: fediverse instances, decentralised services, and the like.

My aim is to make these freely, publicly available, in the hope that they help people worrying about what they might need to do.

Hopefully - hopefully - I'll have something by early next week.

@Edent for years my advice to devs has been "write code that you can fix at 2am after getting back from the pub".

@ap0llo yeah, MS own the domain. I gather what’s happened is MS Azure own the stack that connects to Edgio, it needs changes to move to another CDN provider, nobody has done the work as everybody went on holiday, so they’ve told internal teams to abandon ship from AzureEdge.

@rootwyrm but Microsoft own Azureedge.net domain, so can point it anywhere.. it seems really strange

I don't see how #LLM s can be developed into something that wants to do anything, that has an agenda, goals. This, it seems to me, is a necessary characteristic of generalised artifical intelligence. And not something present in stochastic parrotry.

Caught Charles Stross faving my posts about Forth. So *this* explains his stories about programming being a noospheric trap door to unspeakable sentient horrors from outside the realm of time and reason

Meta, 5 years ago: "Boo hoo you gotta let us control all the social medias you couldn't trust anyone else to do it. Please regulate us, please make regulations that literally only we could comply with"

Meta 2 years ago: "Oh we're gonna join the fediverse"

Meta today: "We're 4chan now. We can't let Elon Musk have all the 4chan fun"

I, for one, applaud Meta's courageous decision to...

*checks notes*

...allow bigotry as long as there are enough bigots to make the bigotry "mainstream".

"This isn't about Meta being scared of Trump. It's about Zuckerberg recognizing an opportunity. He's not capitulating to pressure; he's aligning himself with power. There's a difference. The company that claimed it needed to protect teens from LGBTQ content is now suddenly concerned about having too many content restrictions. What changed? The political winds."

The real reason that OS/2 flopped went on to shape modern software

Even Microsoft's lead architect misunderstood the failure

(To be clear: These were VERY high quality bug reports. If I start using your Rust library, you are about to become either very happy or very unhappy, depending on how you feel about receiving long, detailed and devastatingly accurate bug reports.)

Heads up, #AppleNewton folks … it appears that the future date bug has bit us again. If your device is running #NewtonOS 2.1, even with the Y2010 patch, it will freeze after setting the date to 2025.

Naturally, discussion regarding a possible solution is happening on the mailing list.
