Ghost story for Christmas klaxon. The excellent "Schalcken the Painter" is on BBC4 tonight at 10.30pm, and then on iPlayer. Really not to be missed. bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001gc8r

Last day of work before breaking off for Christmas. I concede it may have been a mistake to have the album playing in the background — I’m racing to get everything tied up to a concept album based on the theme of an infinite loop. By all means put the mulled wine on, but I may be some time…

#DYK that COFFIN COLLARS like this were invented to thwart bodysnatchers in the early 19th century? The collar was fixed around the neck of a corpse and bolted to the bottom of a coffin, making it nearly impossible to remove the body from its grave. Bodysnatchers (or "Ressurectionists") stole bodies to sell to anatomists and medical schools during this period.

In #JapaneseFolklore yuki-onna is a terrifying #yokai who is sometimes mistakenly believed to be a ghost. She appears on snowy winter nights, gliding across the snow apparently without feet. She is dressed in white with blue lips and transparent skin. Her icy gaze can be deadly, and she can suck the life force out of you and leave you to die in the snow.

Spring-Heeled Jack terrorized Victorian Britain from 1838 to 1904. Perfectly sane individuals claimed to have encountered the jumping demon, who supposedly bounded out of the night to smack startled victims in the face with an ice-cold hand.

In #JapaneseFolklore there is a giant toad #yokai known as ogama. It is believed that when toads reach 1000 years old they develop supernatural powers. They live deep in the forests and the larger they grow, the more dangerous they become. Their breath is rainbow coloured and they are also accomplished shapeshifters. These evil yokai may disguise themselves as humans but they are also happy to eat humans if one crosses their path.

GRAVEYARD GUN (c.1820) - used to prevent bodysnatchers from stealing corpses to sell to anatomists. Set at the foot of a grave, the gun would have had three tripwires around it. One such gun reportedly killed a grieving father by accident. Coffin collars, fixed around the necks of a corpse and bolted to the bottom of a coffin, were also used to keep bodies in their graves.

Thel blackhouses at Suidhe, near Bunessan, in Mull in this morning's frosty sunshine. Beautiful rounded corners and gable ends. Made mostly of lovely local Moine metamorphic rocks.

First took a photograph at this spot years ago as a 'weather picture' for the newspaper for which I was working.
It's a rural country lane, near Penshaw, Sunderland and for a week or two either side of the Winter Solstice, the sun sets in just the right spot.
It was absolutely freezing here this afternoon, but thankfully, the air was still, so no added wind chill.
