Photographer Renatas Jakaitis captured this unintended moment when three fallow-deer were walking along a path and the sound of her camera caught their attention. Like an optical illusion, the deer appeared as one body with three almost identical heads.

Friday Flyday! Here’s a bee-mimicking robber fly (Laphria) feeding on a honey bee it has killed.

Something for — close up of my front garden wall this morning. Not sure if the meltwater on the ivy leaf on the left is due to my breath as I lent in for the close up.

Quick snap on this morning’s walk. Grass covered in frost and for a brief moment the rising sun was fiercely reflected in a couple of widows of a house.

2-million yr-old #DNA from N #Greenland reveals that the region was once home to #mastodons, lemmings, hares & geese. The breakthrough pushes the DNA record back by 1m years to when the #Arctic region was 11-19C warmer than today, with flower-filled grassy #glades & #forests of poplar & birch, & offers unprecedented insights into how climate changes can shape ecosystems.

In Ainu folklore akkorokamui is a red octopus so huge it can swallow ships whole. Its bright red body turns the ocean red and ships know to avoid the sea during this time. This #yokai was both feared and revered as a god.

The tomb of Christopher Columbus in the Cathedral of Seville, October 2022. The remains of Columbus are well travelled. Starting in Valladolid, Spain, they were moved to Seville, then Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), on to Havana (Cuba), and finally back to Seville in 1899.

Kirkjufellfoss, #Iceland 🌈

I left Reykjavik early morning and headed 3 hours north to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula to shoot Kirkjufell.
We arrived at the famous peak. It was a downpour. My heart sank. Exhausted and still to early to go eat dinner, I took a nap in the car for “a few minutes.” A few minutes turned into an hour.
As I slept, the sun had come out behind me and woke me up. I turned and looked at Kirkjufell. My jaw dropped. Rainbow over Kirkjufell!

In #JapaneseFolklore there is a wish-granting #yokai that resides in dolls & is known as hinnagami. They are created by a complex magical ritual of collecting earth from graves, shaping it into a doll & then leaving it on the roadside to be trampled by 1000 people. Although they grant their owner any wish, they will demand another wish is made each time & the process continues forever. Even after death, the hinnagami will continue to haunt its creator.

For us, #GothicAdvent is inspired by all those seasonal tales shot through with tragedy, or featuring otherworldly elements.

If your heart doesn't break a little at this HC Andersen tale, you're already dead inside. 🖤🎄

Beside being part of the Swedish Christmas celebrations Julbocken was also a mystical creature in the folklore. The goat was connected with the Devil. These stories might hail from priests, trying to stop the use of Julbocken.
On legends tell of the Christmas goat as a straw doll which were decorated with colorful ribbons and then placed in the barn. One evening a girl goes there to dance with the goat. Instead she meets the Devil, who tears her to pieces. #adventfolktale #folklore #advent
