After all the lead-up, the Missouri River was surprising brief and anti-climactic. A lot of the surrounding lakes and sloughs look just like it - not surprising since the are all located in old river beds.

It was a frozen day - more cold and ice have than in the Rockies. The Missouri River was steaming like the devil.

@rvaughnmd The coldest I've ever been is a few hours cycling in rain, just above freezing temperature.

Wait, no - the coldest I've EVER been is a two-hour ride in a jetboat, constant 30 mph, no shelter, driving rain and sleet. That was with literally seven layers on, too - including a waterproof rain jacket AND a parka. AND winter mittens supposedly good to -20F, etc. AND it was only in the 40s (F), not even the 30s. Still haven't warmed up from that one yet, and it's been a month now.

In light of the news of a cyclist being killed by a driver in #Toronto yesterday and another cyclist sustaining life threatening injuries from a driver, here's an article on that discusses how drivers can take a pro-active role in keeping everyone on the road safe.

It doesn't have to be an us-vs-them dynamic. All it takes is #empathy, #awareness of ourselves and our surroundings, #communication and #kindness.

@DrTCombs Camera on the top of my helmet, thus very visible.

Years ago I mounted a head lamp in that same location, that looks a lot like a camera to the casual viewer. I swore at the time that the change in driver behavior was instantaneous.

Finally we are entering infamous . Railroad or white water raft are the only possible ways to access this rugged canyon, lined with sheer, 3000 foot granite cliffs. The river drops 300 feet in the space of just 3 miles, creating a series of Class IV and V rapids.

You can see why the railroad had a hell of a time building this section. You'd better read about it:
