Did #austerity cause #Brexit? In the past weeks there was much talk in the UK on a return of #austerity. I am a Prof of Economics at Warwick University and I wrote a paper in 2018 that shows how #austerity was instrumental to bringing about #Brexit. This is a means of #introduction on here.

The paper shows that #austerity was a pivotal driver of #Brexit result. But that is only half the story: most likely there wouldnt have been an #EUReferendum ...
@Paulos_the_fog yes, it seems British exceptionalism, or perhaps more to the point, English exceptionalism, has a lot to answer for, but it's still remarkable that it can lead people to actively vote so directly against their own personal material interests
As a #ScreenReader user, I find #hashtags at the end of a post to be suboptimal. As I'm unable to visually scan, I don't know that you haven't written anything after the hashtags, and hence have to choose between: listening to them anyway, or being okay with potentially missing content. When written inline within the flow of your text, this problem doesn't occur. #accessibility #a11y
Meaningful #climate action isn’t just about cooling off the planet. It will:
✔️Promote food, energy, & water security
✔️ Protect public health
✔️ Conserve biodiversity
✔️ Address ocean acidification
✔️ Promote justice & equity
✔️ Provide economic opportunities
✔️ Prevent the emergence new diseases
✔️ Foster a more sustainable & resilient future
There’s still time. 🌍 Not much.
Article on Musk's cultural miscalculations
Great article.
"Musk thinks he bought a tech company, but he’s actually bought a community of users, and that's where its value lies..."
So says Prof Paul Bernal - Professor of Information Technology Law at the University of East Anglia School of Law.

@Aw_Mueller or perhaps studying its decline would make for a more interesting project? a key feature of novel research is a degree of unpredictability 🤔
French authorities declare the use of Microsoft Office and Google Docs illegal in schools and education markets, as they don’t follow GDPR and might disturb later competition by making students used to these proprietary solutions.
Moving from centralized walled gardens to the Fediverse means understanding the importance of web protocols, interoperability, and the federated world of applications.
Mastodon is one of the numerous applications built on top of the ActivityPub protocol.
Just as email paved the way to the web for billions, federated applications will open door to many ambitious democratized solutions.

#Mastodon features that #Twitter doesn’t have:
* Temporary muting (e.g. for a day)
* Self-verified URLs in the profile
* Hiding spoilers etc. via content warnings
* URLs must start with protocols (fewer false positives, e.g. in code).
* Everyone can edit posts (in v4+).
* No ads (which doesn’t come for free = donate if you can afford it)
More obscure: I like that you can search for post URLs to “transfer” them between accounts.
It's fascinating to see how the range of countries using the #fediverse changes every week I am looking at https://fediverse.observer/stats. I am wondering whether a chart that links user_growth to country over time would be possible with the API of @fediverseobserver? #opendata
Dear #FediAdmin folk, please remember to take care of yourselves.
These are exciting times and it's fun to be a part of what's happening, to be sure. But this is a marathon, not a sprint.
It's okay…
✅ …to close registrations on your instance;
✅ …if your instance is a bit slower or experiences some hiccups;
✅ …if some of people from your instance flow somewhere else;
✅ …to decide to run a smaller instance.
Thank you for your work!
An Incredible Day In Internet History
It started with the Twitter lockout. 10,000 new users per hour. A QUARTER MILLION people migrated to Mastodon in one day. The servers struggled. Remarkably, admins all over the world built up capacity in real time. New users were patient. The system held.
It's running better now. There will be more hard days ahead, but people powered social media has arrived.
@Richard_Littler
Being on Mastodon for the past few days and it reminded me of the friendliness of the earlier days of the Internet, before *coughs* forced engagement, and *coughs* metrics. It's nice to feel heard and seen, and to reciprocate naturally to that. I don't mind the slowness.
@Paulos_the_fog wait so that minimum pension is about double the uk state pension? remarkable! and people of that age are considered the core demographic for Tory support, right? I never understand how anyone decides to vote for them, but every time I hear something like this I feel even more confused 😂
If you're new here, you might need some help with posting and privacy.
In between the polling tool and the CW tag on your text box is an icon that defaults to a padlock. If you click it, you can see the different visibility options for your posts. This is different than on the bird!
🌐 PUBLIC - is when you want it visible to the entire Fediverse, including search (though use hashtags!)
🔓 UNLISTED - means it's still public, but hidden from search
🔒 FOLLOWERS ONLY - self-explanatory
@ MENTIONED PEOPLE ONLY - only to the people explicitly tagged in the post
If you're trying to communicate as widely as possible, with the hope of getting boosted, choose PUBLIC.
All the other settings offer narrower options to your liking.
NB: You need to make this choice for all of your posts before you click "Post!"
I hope this helps you post how you want to post!
@Paulos_the_fog haha that's nice but I'd hesitate to attribute to design that which might adequately be explained by incompetence!
