Pro tip: If someone gives you a compliment, dont respond by giving them a compliment in return, it will feel forced and insincere usually. Be ok with just saying "Aww thanks I really appreciate that". Compliments are best received when they are unprovoked.

@freemo My instinct for years was to deflect by minimizing the compliment. It took conscious effort to get decent at just saying thank you.

@mkb depends on the compliment. If it is over the top i may try to minimize it, as i do feel modesty is important. But otherwise I'd lean towards accepting it gracefully most of the time.

Probably good you broke that habit for your own self image reasons.

I also used to do that until it was pointed out that by minimizing the compliment, you also minimize the opinion of the person giving it... in essence saying "you don't know what you're tallking about"

Once seen in that light, it became almost impossible to minimize a compliment.
