@igeljaeger Sure it is. It just so happens to be able to talk to other social media servers that arent mastodon as well. Doesnt make it any less a social media though.
@igeljaeger you certainly could do that as well, it would be equally valid. But depends on context. In the case of what I said it would not be applicable because the behavior i describe is most prominant in the Mastodon social media network not in activity pub overall as much.
But yes you could say it is a social media as well.
Obv u don't use Twitter. It's the gold standard for shitty behaviour.
@Skypilot Not a lot, I have 1,300 followers on twitter and have never been terribly active. My posts here do cross post to twitter though.
I will say I have never seen even a fraction of the level of deplorable behavior there I see here based on the messages i get and replies to my posts. I cant speak for the content on twitter i dont follow though.
Never had even a single incident on twitter, though like i said not terribly active there. Just cross posting and i respond when i get notified
It's impossible to believe you know enough about Twitter to reference it in a post but are also totally unaware that it is the internet's defacto toxic shithole.
You must have some agenda I can't see.
Ok. I think the problem is we are evaluating different aspects.
Here if someone posts an unpopular opinion on the network you will usually get quite a few attacks and butt hurt people calling for a ban on you or your server if you have 1000+ followers.
On twitter you post such a thing and the response is usually silence, maybe a like or two, no real drama.
At least that is the expiernce ive had between the two in the past.
The volume of posts in twitter is imense, I tend to think of it as half of the people there being stunned, speechless at all the noise and crap.
The other half, yelling at top of their lungs, trying to get attention.
And there's no one to complain to, as the administration there is corporate, and changes the rules if an account is big and brings traffic.
Here, people can object and register it in a publicly viewable manner. Even if the admins of the offending instance deny or disregard the complaint, it all is on the record.
And we can isolate instances we feel unworthy or aggressive, etc.
I find it immensely more sane.
I find the vast majority of twitter are just bots and fake personas posting, little more than advertising engine for the famous.
The actual people on the platform just want followers and really dont care abut much else, if that. So virtually everythingin twitter is noise and the quality of the posts are shit.
But I find the quality of the posts int witter to be shit only because they are low quality posts, not because of any inherent antagonism.
Here I find the immature and antagonistic nature much more prevalent, but the noise far less. But i suppose thats the consequence when you have more actual people posting who have an interest in conversation and not just a wall of ads.
Mastodon ain't a social media. #PleromaGang
