** #Qoto Feature request ?
Could we possibly get MORE Pinned posts in our Profiles?
Reason being, they ARE really nice to keep important ones on view. I use and enjoy those.
I am using the Allowed *5* max Pinned posts.
All of those are Kick-Ass ones -- some mine, some I find tremendously important.
Please, Sir. can I have some More ?
@design_RG That would actually be an easy thing to do I'd think.. We should start keeping track of QOTO specific feature requests though.. maybe start adding tickets to our repo? Also any other suggestions throw in theor own seperate ticket too!
@design_RG Mastodon has almost no config variables sadly.. Eugen is very opinionated and feels every instance should have the same configuration as what he prefers apparently...
@design_RG At some point I will experiment with a pleorma instance and if we have community support might even migrate.
The feature set on pleorma is quickly starting to surpass mastodon (which is largely why i picked mastodon). so you may find we migrate at some point.. I'd have to test it first.
Basically once pleorma gets groups it will probably be a deal breaker if mastodon isnt even close to that yet.
@freemo > At some point I will experiment with a pleorma instance and if we have community support might even migrate.
That is wonderful, thank you!! I would love to see and be part of that.
I should find the time and commit to one week of seriuos Friendica usage -- I have an account on one instance, but never got around to giving it the analytical thought treatment.
It does have impressive features, and federates well. Gotta do it. Soon, possibly (says someone who's already stretched, thin, lol).
Really glad that you share this vision. Mastodon is too controlled and unwilling to accept new ideas even when they are implemented and clearly show value. Time to support new thinking.
@design_RG yea I really havent been too happy with Eugen's handling of the feature set.. He seems too locked into "twitter clone" mentality and minimalisim.. I prefer a feature rich platform.
When I picked mastodon it was on par with feature set and had the biggest following. which I thought would equate to the best development future. But that seems less and less the case as time goes on.
@freemo Those are excatly my views.
From trying to show him my proposal for a better AWI, using more of our wide screen displays.
His reaction, dismissive, was a surprise that I didn't like the Thin columns, ADHD inducing 4 panel, multi Feed that he designed AWI for.
And this proposal wasn't a one liner comment in mastodon, but a fully argued and illustrated new topic -- right at his instance.
Glad to see we share this vision! The Future Beckons.
@design_RG Eugene generally isnt very good with integrating other peoples opinions in general, not just about mastodon.
I dont think he means wrong by it, but I have never seen the man ever personally change his opinion on something. Moreover if someone tries to push his opinion in one direction or the other he seems to be resistive to it to the point of digging in deeper in the opposite directly.
You dont know this but the small handful of instances that declared we are fascist assholes and started blocking us all really started with some comments eugene made in the early days of QOTO that pretty much just started the trend of people trying to hate on us.
A few months after QOTO was established there was one user (now exiled from the fediverse ironically) who was trying his best to get me to say something to prove I was a fascist and drilling me with "what would you do as a moderator" in various border line situations. My answers were generally "well it depends".
He then started demanding i answer what I would do if someone said "It is ok to be white".. I said soemthing like "Well it depends on the context of their feed overall. If there is no indication of racism of any kind and it was a comment they made in isolation but otherwise shows acceptance of other races then I wouldnt have a problem with the statement".. Of course at that moment the user erupted in anger about us being fascists and allowing "nazi dog whistles" and what not. To which i politely defended.
Anyway it was rather isolated to just us in the conversation but someone jumped in, tagging @Gargron and said something like "Hey eugen you should check out this thread, there is some nazi shit going on here".. I politely said "I highly doubt eugen is going to be that absurd and see anything here as remotely racist".
Anyway an hour later eugene popped in and was furious that I dare speak for him and assume what his opinion was. He would up agreeing with the people attacking me and publicly stated he would act on the claim. At that point eugene did the unthinkable and silenced the whole of the QOTO server from mastodon.social, effectively showing he labeled us as fascists.
I then quickly appealed to the whole moderator community over at M.S and asked for an explanation and tried to get the silence resolved. I asked them for a specific explanation of what they objected to. They said they would discuss it, eugen never actually contributed in that discussion at all. It took many days before I could even get an answer out of them, weeks in fact I think and had to ask them ever few days for an update. It seemed they were just trying to stall. eventually without much of an explanation they agreed to remove the silence. By that point the damage had already been done and the QOTO reputation ruined partly by the anti-endorsement of eugen himself.
Since then I have been the bigger man and generally eugen has been responsive to me when I message him. So I hold no hard feelings. Though the issue did seem to crop up again when I tried to get us on joinmastodon.com which got similar resistance and apparent stalling, but eventually because I persisted we got on there too.
Anyway I'm not mad at Eugene but he really dropped the ball and it has hurt QOTO ever since that day. He has made no effort to publicly apologize or correct for the damage he did, so while I dont hold a grudge he did loose some serious points with me to be honest.
@freemo @design_RG Uh, I don't remember this and I don't see qoto.org being blocked in our audit log. The earliest domain block recorded in the audit log (which admittedly didn't exist since the very beginning) is December 2017, but your first post on qoto.org is July 2018
I don't remember making any public negative comments about qoto.org so if you could refresh my memory with some links that would be nice. I can't find any using search except one where I defend you against wrong claims.
I can try and dig it up, it was a very long time ago. The problem is the record would be on my M.S accoutn but that account was suspended (the password was hacked by a spammer so I understand why it was suspended honestly in that case and unrelated here)...
Let me try to dig it up.
Also QOTO was never suspended by M.S only silenced.
@freemo @design_RG Silence or suspend are both represented by a domain block model which is logged to the audit log.
Are you sure it wasn't just your account that got silenced?
I am absolutely positive. It was a very big deal for QOTO for a while. Let me keep looking I can probably dig it up eventually. QOTO retains logs of posts taht far back so should be in here somewhere.
Actually I think it might have been before we enabled full text search.. this was litterally very early on for QOTO.
I kinda wish i still has my M.S account as it was all in Dm there.. I wonder if maybe my M.s account was just silenced and not suspended.. let me check.
Seems my account on M.S is still there just locked. would you mind unlocking it ( @freemo@mastodon.social ). I just secured the password so spammers wont be able to hijack it again. this would enable me to get to the bottom of this for both our sake.
@freemo @freemo @design_RG Done
Thanks, here is the link to the DM thread where I asked the moderators to unsilence QOTO, which was ultimately granted. Which if nothing else shows QOTO was silenced by M.S
incase you cant view the dm for any reason, and for futher clarity, the DM thread I linked to includes this screenshot of the incident which cause M.S to silence us in the first place (which i provided in the DM in the second message in the thread).
@freemo @freemo @design_RG I don't know why I can't see it in the audit log but I found moderator discussions on Discord that mention qoto.org being silenced
However, there is no record of me ever mentioning qoto.org being silenced in public, and it never appeared on our public block list, so how exactly does this equate to "labelling" you anything?
You're anti-endorsement of QOTO occured in the original thread. that caused the silencing. When you jumped in you decried QOTOs stance and made it clear in that thread you were going to take action against QOTO.
Ultimately when you made those statements they spread like wildfire throughout the community and was the seed for what is now accusations against QOTO that continue to this day. While no one can provide any evidence of any of our users ever misbehaving (at least not without moderator action swiftly following) the view held by a small minority of us as being "fascist" originated from the comments you made that day. at least in my mind, that was the start of much of the accusations against us.
As you know a rumor is usually enough int he fediverse even when evidence isnt present. So that simple act on your part did a hell of a lot of damage in the long run.
@freemo @freemo @design_RG What I remember is saying that you shouldn't put words in my mouth. What I don't remember is making some kind of anti-endorsement. However, I admit I just don't remember shit sometimes. 4 years, thousands of various incidents. But I think there is a tendency to equate what some people in the community are doing with what I'm doing. You need to understand this community lives on its own.
I understand, it was a long time ago and I dont really expect you to remember given we were much smaller then and you have a lot on your plate.
But in the end you did take an official stance against QOTO over something that was completely unjustified (in my view) and the impact from that has been significant and long lasting.
With that said I do agree it isnt all your fault. You have been much more reasonable as time goes on. The community needs to bear some blame for perpetuating unfounded claims for sure. But they do, all the same, have a root in how you handled that situation very early on in QOTOs career and its something that once that damage was done, cant be undone even with a mountain of evidence to the contrary.
thanks for taking your time to give your perspective on this though. I know you can be pretty busy and it is appreciated all the same.
The thread is mostly dangling at this point because as I said the user who started it all was suspended sometime later.
I am pretty sure this is one remenant of the thread. If i could still see the whole thread you would have popped up later in the thread:
https://qoto.org/@freemo/100588960105434904
Let me keep looking for you.
Attached are two screen shots of the actual thread, one of the head and one of the tail (the middle is missing but I can add it).
It shows at the end QOTO was silenced and as the moderator pointed out was later unsilenced
In your defense it only took 5 days since i raised the appeal and 10 days since the initial silencing. so not really "weeks" But as I said by the end of this incident the damage was already done and to this day QOTO suffers the fallout from it.
Not exactly. I wouldnt say being swarmed with dozens of users attacking and tagging me (a moderator) over multiple days and starting multiple threads when asked to stop.. and then ultimately silencing your server for it is "the exact same thing"
I also engaged in discussion with your moderators for 24 hours trying to reach a resolution before ultimately silencing your server. When I couldnt make any headway our other moderators also made an attempt to resolve the issue, again, no results.
Not even remotely the same thing.
@freemo While you’re busy justifying yourself yet again to these people on the same issue, they’re once again laughing at you.
I’m not dissing, only explaining: you being respectful (in this case: repeatedly [this is key] spending your time giving rational explanations and justifications; again, repeatedly) towards those who have repeatedly not returned your common courtesy by being disrespectful towards you (in this case: lying about the issue with repeateded mischaracterizations in the hopes that you finally walk away so she can claim victory or that you drown yourself under an endless sea of justifications so she can claim victory), you are ultimately being disrespectful — towards yourself.
Respond to the irrational once, shame on you. Respond to the irrational twice, shame on me.
Respect the disrespectful once, shame on you. Respect the disrespectful twice, shame on me. @mk @design_RG @Gargron
Errrrr, make that “Respond to the irrational with reason once/twice, shame on you/me.” Or maybe it should’ve been “Reason with the irrational…”
Fair point in a sense. Giving someone respect they didnt earn diminishes those I give respect to who have earned it.
If this were a personal matter of someone consistently disrespecting me to my face among my peers I would respond exactly as you suggest, explain myself once and then forget they are there.
The problem, as i see it, is that the fediverse sees these posts and ultimately makes judgements. Very few if any of them will bother to dig deep enough to see the evidence, especially if its way back at the begining of a dispute.
For me the response isnt for M.K., the value of her opinion of me at this point is 0. The explanation is more so anyone who happens to come across the thread see the opposing view point right there next to it, respectfully presented. I'm mostly saving them the effort of needing to dig to get the truth.
In fact because MK is muted I would have never even seen her response if it werent for the fact a friend shared it with me directly. Even now I have no idea what nonsense she continues to spew on that thread.
@freemo
>> Eugen is very opinionated ...
There. Nail, meet Hammer. Right on the head and SO true.
If I ever decide to run an instance, other than my personal Write.freely (private, non federated) -- it will NOT be a mastodon or a variant. GlitchSocial is better. But Pleroma, that's State of the Art for me.
Have three Dell Powerservers on hand too. But I just wouldn't want to commit to hosting a big public instance and keeping it for long run, like you do here (and we all are thankful). Those Dells could be useful someday, a local emergency library is possibility; we can't take the Internet as a permanent fixture, forever, it might not happen.
