There are 2 ways to sign up to the United Federation of Instances, for those wondering.

We have over 200,000 members but looking for more before launch.

One, and the most important, is as an instance admin bringing your instance onto the UFoI. For this you dont need to do anything other than ensure you follow our basic code of conduct. See the proposal/by laws for that:

ufoi.gitlab.io/constitution/un

ufoi.gitlab.io/constitution/un

Other than that you dont have to do anything to be a member, and you can be a one person instance or a large instance. You do need to promise to federate with other instances in the UFoI. Also you can leave at any time, no questions asked, so not much obligation.

The other is as an individual.. for that just let me know and ill give you access to everything and add you to the list of contributors. In this case you arent under any obligation either, you can join in on conversationsn, suggest edits, or just lurk. Up to you. Message me if you want to be a contributor and ill add you and check out the repo here:

Any questions first feel free to ask me.

@freemo hey you might wanna give my server rules a look. 1-4 and 6-7 are based on actual Swedish law. so if you want your UFI to be grow you might want to adapt them into your rules. or at least be compatible with instances that choose to follow those rules.

@Ryle
@stemid

Yea I just looked, they seem perfectly compatible as-is... where do you feel there would be a problem?

@freemo I don't, I just wanted to give you a heads up that a lot of instances have local laws they need to follow. Like the Swedish one 1998:112 is actually a law for people who operate online message boards.

The UFoI sets a minimum set of rules for federating instances, it doesnโ€™t decrease it to just that set. The rules on this instance for example cover more. https://awoo.fyi/about/tos

@stemid Yea, I beleive our minimum rules wont violate local laws since any rules applicable to local laws are welcome to be added on top for the individual instance.

so yes if your interested you are fully compatible. Have you decided if you want to be added yet (keep in mind ill be launching this weekend so the window for easy entry wont be around too much longer).

@freemo No I'm not interested in joining any federation. I hope you do good and don't abuse your power. I just feel like we already have the only federation we need and we shouldn't form more silos over petty squabbles.

@freemo how large is your database btw, and how many mau's? I'm going around polling mastoadmins for this info.

I'm just a bit concerned over the growth of the DB, and having seen the issues huge DBs bring at work. I want to get ahead of this before it becomes a problem.

@stemid ill get back to you when i have a chance but I am **not** the prerson to ask as we have abusively large databases and data requirements.

Its the result of us being one othe largest instances over most of the history of the Fedi, we keep all data, which means almost every post that has ever existed in the fedi is cached here.

@freemo well it's a good baseline to have. metalhead.club had 60G and claim to have 4000 MAU's.

btw I also think the MAU number is inflated on most instances. if they just run tootctl statuses remove those counters might be re-calculated to a significantly lower number. just fyi.

@stemid im not in a place to check right now but when i get a chance ill look into it for you then.
