@JonKramer depends what you mean by that. We cant predict when flares happen, however the particles ejected from a flare take some time to reach us, while the xrays are speed of light.

@niclas @freemo , I have actually read some nutters make the claim that climate change is caused by the sun. Most of those folks own or want to own F350 trucks...

@JonKramer

It isnt wrong to say the sun plays a factor... but your a moron if you think the bulk of global warming is caused mostly by the sun.

@niclas

@freemo @niclas , agreed. The best numbers I have seen say it is roughly 1%. And 100% outside of our control, while the rest of the drivers are mostly in our control.

@JonKramer

I dont know the exact percentages but it is clear the overwhelming majority of the problem is human-caused... the issue is that it may be non-linear.. the human causes may amplify the effects of the sun and vice versa since a lot of this follows non-linear responses.

But we can speculate all you want, the truth is the rate of chance of our climate is significantly faster than has ever occured in the history of life on this planet... so its clear where the problem lies.

@niclas

@freemo @niclas Not a lot of current papers on the topic, but some papers have reported up to 40% effect by the sun's activity. The problem with this is it looks like that number doesn't take into account the 'solar constant' which has been changing since 1978, when we started to really study that number. THAT number has been FALLING, which would drive massive global cooling. So, unless the human factors are WAY more than measured, that claim is highly doubtful.

@JonKramer

I dont have the time right now to read the paper but I bookmarked it to read tomorrow when im more free.

@niclas

@freemo @niclas It's old anyway. from 2000. Not really worth reading, although I am...

@freemo interesting. never thought sun flares affected radio as well, it generally affects my head, usually.
