Grades can be perceived as rewards or punishments; high marks reward those who learned well and punish those who did not. There is evidence this reasoning does not explain what we observe in classroom.

@garyackerman Thats because students dont care about their marks, they care about not making their parents angry by getting bad marks, but few kids care about the marks on their own.

Why should they, what value have we teached them marks have?
