But me, personally, if someone--anyone--is pointing a gun at me, I'm going to try and react in the way that would least likely end in my getting shot.
I think he means, what is an appropriate way to respond both for society and from how the law should view it.
Its a fair question.
Society isnt being held at gunpoint. The rules and ethics around an individual being held at gunpoint that society should agree on is the question.
