My thoughts on what I thought about for a while + copy and paste of the main point from another discussion which reminded me of the dynamic and says it fairly well
So I am thinking in realm of doing "Free" which hasn't worked well for a lot of us or scraps the barrel often enough too close (as input or finances) and since FREE also in my ethos and even my name then it's good for me to study it too with others doing things free and unhappy.... recently someone else WHILE ALSO knowing that is our ethos to almost die from our own freedom efforts and eventually I hope people can do things more from love not money... so I'm not thinking about charging either but here is one real story / testimony specific to a website with similar-enough dynamics to show what I was thinking basically that things even increase in cost at the same time if you become popular so it's less manageable often if growing...

So as an equation I think it captured something true there that I was thinking about for a while and although I don't advocate the opposite either... just the middle is often not clear or non-existent probably you've seen that some of world most popular json and other stuff is held up by 2 people often or lots of stories of how it's not working (perhaps they don't know how to ask also)
AND THEN it's also political anyway (i.e. money = political so people don't give because they don't agree with money / often costs to pay/ generally we all don't want to give for what we are forced to pay governments back to with others as less priority
AND we like the advantages of what is replicable (similar to what copy & paste is) although still not escaping paying bills for other stuff which also is extortion in cities and stupid to pay for (sorry people in the country simply don't have to pay stupid prices based on leveraging each others human needs as a demand - RENT PAYING IS A TERRIBLE THING FOR WHAT IS USUALLY PAID ALREADY) - we try our best without money and eventually gets lower and lower IF NOT HAVING RICH DADDIES AND MOMMIES OR RICH KIDS THEMSELVES PAYING US AS PHILANTHROPY or something balancing the money injustice at the fat cat level instead of expecting small cats to constantly pay... and pay even more if it gets popular! (not always this true or dramatic, and can stay small but it's tempting is to blow money when you have since that's the system... and American company size is from vulture capitalism / venture capitalism

I actually like the idea of optional ads done in the right way if there was a simple list for me to click (nothing even in software needed)
I could choose when I fancied to pick from their list of stuff and anyway I probably am only 10 years later... so to give eyeballs to what I already liked as keywords or even / train / filter keywords is not much of an ethical problem unless you *bozos* put it on youtube / google
*just wanted to say bozos that for some reason* and keep this fun... yes unless you bozos put it youtube then peertube would be part of it but like I said even a list is ok and you'll see the view count shoot up and even some sales!
I feel humanly I could give peopel now using this way by adding contact back, feedback, even things that could go into advertising content!
DIDN'T PLAN TO WRITE THIS BUT UNITES THE FACT THAT PLEBS / NON-DEVS ARE LACKING PLACE IN FREESOFT SO THIS COULD SOLVE THAT BY GIVING TO THE ADVERTISING PART AT LEAST... oh yeah finally I got some idea to relate to you people!
If people could unite people at the same time using those keywords, ads, work or connecting other free people using as Adverts then I'd click all day and it doesn't have to be 100% related to the soft either!
Enough to have the same principles as the usual FSF stuff and use Free Soft's own advertising ring policy or own disclaimer. With you policiing and members policing the ring or badge of quality (or some other way pictured) it will show things in a more organised way ?
Like back in the say when people were just clicking rock music websites or whatever on a webring (was powerful discovery) so imagine if similar with a good button picture or even better a page of banner pictures to click on simple list in Mastodon... well consider me a customer / consumer of such things and even able to give my excellent ideas.... excuse me just spilt my milk)

3. GRANTS AND EU TANGENT - BASICALLY TAKING MONEY FROM WRONG PEOPLE AGAIN
Grants and European Union are not always going to keep you guys a float and there is a reason why they are are paying you like hire guns / hands (and not keeping you a float in the first place)
Always about giving $ and then TAKING back more from others or for nasty reasons later in the end of getting control / research / using the bods and geeks they buy like any others... and then shut the poor artists out... forgive the digression
IN SUMMARY - Do a advertising webring yourselves and dance in the % cuts of Freedom hardware and software
Give 99% to me and I'll give 100% back :)

The level of freedom all depends on what one thinks it's morally/ethically correct.
I like the FOSS/FLOSS approach to apps like OsmAnd or Librera. They offer their apps for free on Google play store, though one doesn't get all the premium functionalities. One can easily upgrade either with a one time purchase or a subscription. Or get them totally free, if you were educated, that they are also on F-droid.
Another nice model that works well with games is "watch for win". The idea that you can watch an ad to get some kind of boost. This way the user is not bombarded with distractions during usage.
A typical approach for FOSS/FLOSS repos/apps is to pay for a service. As in one can do it oneself for free or pay someone to do it for them.

One thing that I still don't have a sound opinion is on the topic of ads on websites or in videos. As in the moral justification of selling your users' data for some cash.
Most people I know use some kind of ad-blocker and some even use a sponsor blocker. Although I assume this is a small fraction of users. Some websites have already implemented the notice to turn off the ad-blocker, but then there is the extension anti-ad-blocker to block such occasions.
Probably the only option I can get behind on are static ads such as affiliate links, since I feel that if one trusts the creator, then one would most likely purchase the product through their link.
Word of mouth still feels like the best approach of learning new services or options.
In the end it is a battle of the educated vs non-educated.

I feel that everyone who uses a free app or service that is not selling your data in one form or another should contribute in some way, either simply by donating or if the know-how exists, developing. Sometimes just commenting on issues in the repos suffices enough.

For the 1st part
Good info. Quick thoughts since most of that was info would be:
- Yes we could even make badges or experience points but not sure, still one's own direction here is good and not tracking too much is good. List of links.
- Wouldn't touch google but I get this is how it works a lot right now offering apps, but forcing another way is my idea.
- Good to see existing the *requirements* in this dynamic (I would do a small meeting on it) and then the needs of app developers and people (also take mastodon messages or meeting) while still not wanting / expecting exactly the same service or copying it (at least not at first)- because we can't do all-you-can-eat or don't want those ANALytics if it involves evils.... :)
And rather people are interested and occasionally push for certain 'drives' in some direction by requesting it and anyway people tend to catch on too in other ways (and existing ways would still continue anyway along side anything we do for us to keep in mind)
For the 2nd part after the "---" :
I would personal not complicate it with technology and have it more voluntary links to click... One might be tempted to make it similar to 'their' model or tech... but having basic stats like as abacus and other counters would be possibly enough to consider 'yeah it's working' and 'yeah people are clicking'...

I like your "In the end it is a battle of the educated vs non-educated." but almost taking it purely from the 'anyone can watch anything' approach then I think similar to any zombie like auto-play on youtube, then simply we have 'advertising' which is simply peertube autoplay and shoving via FTP a directory of sponsor videos or new products, even just a picture slideshow (like on my site) can allow people to eat their food or sit there while doing anything and watch it

In summary
A nice reply, something more active on our part I'm looking for but manual, a little bit more teeth showing without copying the same tech as existing models... human cultivation of existing projects and basic picture and video link / mini-seminar meeting to explain or something advertising and not (explaining protocols allowing questions and answer etc).
I think that would be fine manually as trying that way and then re-evaluating after making some main channels / ways of advertising / slideshow / FTP silo to browse!).

Slight digression but very much a tool for storage...
I mentioned FTP a bit because I don't like PeerTube (not because it's bad) but if you think about how fast you can dump files, rename, move, label directories, mirror etc... it kicks PeerTube's ass and is still secure and used by the might crews of Debian/Ubuntu and Linux people since it's integral / native to servers. A bit of password or consideration for spam and well this is what I want,,,,

Just with the stuff around I think can just add a list there of relative videos or copy them there and let people choose to download
Just make interesting and oldschool again with list of things to watch or take as suggestions in browsing a silo collection and just link directly as text link, picture logo, or whatever that doesn't take much as I have it already on my hard disk and just drag and drop!!!
And maybe all of us could / can make list (and are doing it) BUT it's not organised or so public so if people can believe in just 1 person then I have the time and space to try something basic and maximise that basic.
So with time I'm seemingly the winner here initially + other headz around of course are welcome to contact but this is possibly all too low-tech / backwards / small-tech for you but I think it's mighty as proper basic click-baiting as education for those that want
