Mastodon Offline / Local Version?

Is a local / offline-only version of Mastodon possible... just for me?

Can I run my instance and forget online for a bit? (is that possible?)

@freeschool

So you can talk only with yourself?

I don't see the point.

@jgg A few goals or targets come with this idea not just 1, so it could be
1- that might be not to share online any more
2- then able to see my own data organised somewhere I can see / use at a least locally...
3-The purpose would be limited down to my own micro blog style archiving style, like a record keeping or diary which it is (has search engine, does pictures, is fast, might not be complicated to install (not sure), and other small things I can still use.

Context:
Today I was talking about it elsewhere and this post was part of finding out (just today) that you CANNOT move posts to a different Mastodon... only things like followers etc. This was new to me.

An exported backup can be made but not really imported anywhere (not even it's own system)

See these posts if interested or if you think you have some answers just reply to this:

and the next link is in same thread but to my point is:

@freeschool

I think what you are looking for is a personal wiki or a note taking app. Most of them would be much easier to install and manage, and would suit your needs better.

IF I can bring my data (this account) offline then it would be worth continuing - else yeah I agree with you

@jgg Yeah the idea is MAYBE IF I can bring my data (this account) offline then it would be worth continuing - now I have little way and need to convert it to new posts somewhere more manually... quite bad as end game or export... I really thought I could move but almost only the followers list or other similar, not posts.

The problem currently is that import to another server (if existed) would create many problems like flooding, notifications, etc and how server pull info in) so I was trying to solve that by being offline...

And if it wasn't for existing data, I'd agree even more that note taking / diary app would be best but I cultivated a lot of my post and would like to go through them offline... or might start now online deleting... but what after?
I can't really take them anywhere... plus Meta, Google are continuing/starting to index more than ever... so crazy... and so this is preventative no matter what they have now...maybe offline is way to go until something else comes up.

I think my server is heading towards PRO-Threads or allowing option, but I think opening it up to or is going to be the same crap as before... so maybe will bow out if really not in my control which I accept a certain never is - but some Fediverse people are really welcoming Threads/Meta/FB style people.

IF I can bring my data (this account) offline then it would be worth continuing - else yeah I agree with you

@freeschool

So the real pain is importing data.

Only thing I see is this plugin for the Nikola static site generator:
github.com/encarsia/import_mas

I haven't used neither, and of course a static site is not exactly what you are asking for, but...

How to import / convert Mastodon data?

@jgg Precisely: How to convert Mastodon data archive file is the main thing,.. (thanks for getting me here)

That link is so close to a solution:
github.com/encarsia/import_mas

And if it could be just a HTML page to load and convert exported archive to HTML that would be awesome (without existing Nikola site or any site... just output to HTML).

P.S
You said "I haven't used neither" but there was only one link... were you referring to more than one thing?

How to import / convert Mastodon exported data archive?

@jgg Hi @encarsia I saw you're the maker of converting any Mastodon archive (the posts from Mastodon)...

github.com/encarsia/import_mas

but I was looking / needing something without existing site like Nikola but similar to the HTML output per post from exported Mastodon archive...

Is it possible to make the same but without Nikola ? A lot of people needing to take data have nothing much to output too or read exported archive data in a better way (as output or front end even)...

Thank you.

@freeschool @encarsia

I haven't used Nikola nor the linked plugin.

How to import / convert Mastodon exported data archive?

Hi @freeschool, do you want to have posts saved in a single HTML file? Did I get this right?
This should be realizable quite, well, easily because in the archive posts are also just stored in a single file (outbox.json) so one just needs to extract post contents and bluntly dump them into a file.

Depending on your requirements handling of
- media attachments
- boosts
- DMs or even
- replies
may be considered and customized.

@jgg

How to import / convert Mastodon exported data archive?

@encarsia @jgg Yes please! If the text and picture can be together in a single HTML to scroll that would be ace.

I remember often tools I used in the past had maximum length or buffer issues on output this way but yeah you know best about this....

And optionally if that doesn't work or fails, an option to have output as individual files... But again see what you can do for all those in the list.
Thanks
