Figure I should post this here as well. How I view the wider decentralized social media ecosystem. A variety of necessary experiments to figure out what will actually bring value.

@mmasnick

I disagree strongly with your framing.

Protocols are not just technical specs. They are also governance agreements.

There is a difference in kind between AT Protocol, developed and implemented by one VC-funded startup, and ActivityPub, an open standard with patent protection, implemented by >100 projects.

On the Internet, we collaborate on standards and compete on products. Experiments happen within that open compatibility structure.

UPDATE: edited for tone. Apologies to Mike.

@evan I understand your hostility here and, but honestly, find it a bit off-putting.

UPDATE: I said here that I don't care about hurting Mike's feelings. That's neither true nor kind, and I shouldn't have said it. I respect him a lot as a thinker and as a person.

Unfortunately I think we have some diametrically opposed ideas on this topic and there might not be an easy middle ground to find.

@evan @mmasnick Evan, every time you pull this bullshit, it pushes people away from the space. I’ve seen this behavior play out for months now, and frankly this plus the lack of stewardship and direction of the protocol, have left me to wonder whether the Fediverse or ActivityPub have an actual future. It’s demoralizing and embarrassing, and bad enough that I’ve largely considered throwing in the towel because of how this all makes me feel.

I have tried my best to be upbeat, supportive, and positive. But when I think of the current situation the Fediverse is in, especially in regards to ActivityPub and its lack of direction and stewardship at a high level, I visually imagine sticking a loaded gun in my mouth. Seriously! I don’t want to think of my 15 years in the space as a waste, but if you can’t grow a fucking spine and figure out how to move the ecosystem and protocol forward in a big way, then ActivityPub is toast. Yeah, Meta and Automattic and Ghost and Flipboard are building for it now, but they might end up being the only ones developing for it in the long term. With enough resources, any of them can switch to something else. Or just stop entirely.

It’s nice that you wrote a book, it’s great that you’re running a foundation, but your protocol is an unfinished product that relies on bespoke implementation and FEPs to even fucking function. You have an opportunity to humble yourself, draw inspiration from other efforts, and right the ship during one of the most pivotal moments of its history, and you’re fucking squandering it.

Users are the main weakness. We have reached limits and left people alone for too long and now need to help sort out people / improve them/ tighten mindsets ... We have enough tech to actually achieve better people in "Society" as the "daily work".....

Users are the main weakness that needs improving. We have enough tech and have left real people alone for too long who need everyone's to help sort out everyone else and improve them... To achieve better social and "society" we don't need more tech...

@deadsuperhero @evan @mmasnick @thisismissem @steve @jpaskaruk @alyx @jens

What I genuinely feel / see / think here is the basis for all weakness (and the solution)

THE USERS ARE THE WEAKNESS - THAT IS WHAT NEEDS IMPROVING

That means all of us. If you want to imagine better people and better interaction then work on it.
Helping on producing / developing better people is the shift of focus we need (not more computers right now). A test might be imagining you had the best system right now and it still the case that we would all have users as the problem around in many seens and unseen ways (psychology ultimately and lack of togetherness, alone users).

Without that, software-heavy developement is ALL at risk of being a time-dump / investment of your time into near-nothing as a version on top of a version which can just be wiped / overwritten / ignored / etc

The real work (as it always was) is to now work on and with people openly and upgrade their mindset willingly and by example (down-to-earth accessible idols) WHILE they are on our servers daily and often why they chose to come there in the first place.
People look for / ask for / need it but currently we only get free space (kind of hard to write that but in short it's not dedicated and a lot of distraction instead also)... And since State systems don't do this care daily (or even ask us what we think / want) then the real progress now that we have to feed each other as we have the advanced-basics of expression as text, images, WebRTC video conference etc and beyond with that is more real people.

States not only do similar with 'systems' but also attack people daily so we now need to take responsibiliy for outselves else fall under attack daily even from Hollywood style media and news, not even just creating our own thing from our own material (there is a big different as: made by us for us.

We all have had enough tech in general or as progress of sort on many levels and I think "we are already there" as far as going for real social change or any human work as the evolution and extention of that since many of us admit computers and code were intially escape that needs linking back to humanity help.

Even with your best system imaginable it would still revolve around users and people who haven't had the human time and evolution time to catch up the same with the "who and what happened" to tech and many types of wars inside wars, from supermarket 'discount' algorythims to money and tech itself) so all from that needs updating in the human mind more than anything external which we have great and a lot of already.

All is at risk without improving humans / creating togetherness first. Remember we all started on google too unknowingly and I think thats the same for others going deeper in usage. All of here probably had to hard-fork ourself to get here so imagine how hard that is for others which can't do exactly the same but something slower for others and as dedicated amongst the people can be genuine social system.

If States are not going to do essential work and to get to care and understand people then we do it.
We use something we have already to show others for and even reasons what might not seem obvious that all leads back to BigTech and States that back eating tje earth as users feast on data (knowingly but also not as the daily burn of guilt). Systems are not always better as mindset but going towards people means putting more things towards practise locally or with others rather than just watching like another and even education I have without near-0 ability to share / be appreciated or even be told what's wrong properly and simply to have that as something solid I can show someone else as "that's it, see this" apart from meme's lol - but yeah something similar but more-human and adaptable).

Call this a merging of people from mixed pasts to get best of all rather than the assimilation that almost all cultures try to force onto it's people with restricted protocols which humans have ability to switch or break out of letting others be themselves.

Without that, software-heavy developement is ALL at risk of being a time-dump / investment of your time into near-nothing as a version on top of a version which can just be wiped / overwritten / ignored / defuct / block as users will just move on to 'whatever' again without knowing much what the point was and waste away what there (even the knowing here are wasting away too) simply because they are not multiplying their culture or upholding those with others. We do see slower progress of what I mean as or culture multiplying as the overall going on and coming to us, and people have to meet that challenge.

Think of people investment as a less wipable medium and purification of interaction coming from style dedicated fermentation to enjoy the diversity and all our struggles while priorities and reasons surface and become known, added together as mass, while still more figuring out where it's all going and what's possible as the prep for the whole to fall into place. Often people acting weird is the need for all these points or feeling to come out in a more dealt-with way which almost only happens when something more dedicated culture itself happens (a culture of re-creating culture). We literally have to recreate all culture coming from smashed states doing all the bad work into one almighty strength inside.

The rest is again not as needed unless your want to scrape the gems-
- thanks for reading.... extra points below
====================================================================

An advanced-basic email-like system would be enough with the right people. But since now we have better systems, the switch back to incrementing human development is needed, not computers as such.

Computer maintainance is enough work while improving people would be more of a human-genuine change, less distant and permanent change. Platforms can be attacked easier than many individual humans with stronger better embededed principles and examples over time living it whatever system they have).

This might be hard to accept as someone stupid like me says "you achieved you job, thank you- no more is needed... helps is now needed to balance up more the human side" while still imagining some people might want to work on computers more than what we have to do humanly.

Consider this the difficult pat on your shoulder that as computer developer "Your work is done, now develop the humans with it". Because without humans even your creations are at risk of wasted time or only becoming another ad farm where users are like what we have now almost misusing it as a better Twitter (perhaps called Mastodon) posting google and youtube links tracking, mining them too by extention *of it's users*... No amount of open source will solve that. So giving the world better users and strong people is the best we can do so if we had to go back to email or ActivityPub then the world actually improve from humans as all else comes from them.

What we have now which is hell-good and now if really we want to change the world(people) more than that then personal stewarding and sorting is needed which also includes reducing risk of giving better ideas to BigTech which scoops and scrapes it all using their mass resources and suppressing human psychology of caring for people and earth. Long sentences but this is ultimately what each user has to be able to do as ability else fall into short-text short-termism that makes all things suffer.

Another efficient Linux ad-farm server or platform is not needed (even if you didn't plan it we see it online) and if BigTech can change the last bits of coding towards the whole chaing being different animal then we also must consider stopping development if all goes to them also. Imagine playing Go and the whole chain of white pieces turning to black (just as visual example of what BigTech does with all good things to drill and extract that much fa$ter).

Again, humbly I this. I like the sentences like "protocols are a social, not a technical, issue" because that seems to hold true and run true through everything to the end... and beyond a basic send and recieve platform (which sounds demeaning) isn't it us as the social the main objective or suddenly do people back out and say it's not my responsibity?

Have I missed something computers can do that actually needs humans to make friends over? (and also the reason why other things like people take up because of our own lacking which takes for us to keep up daily for us not to need such things)

Now that we have things solid enough and advanced-basics (text image sending etc) I think my email example for ActivityPub like a literal "inbox" JSON is done well enough that we now need to improve people and not tech - for real social to catch up. I don't know anyone who can say we are not stupid and personally have big gaps which is like the phrase is a reflection of what we don't do daily also.

Please let me know what more there is more here without better caring people and not just using your tech or software to be flipped by BigTech or even 1 user who can scrap and map it all... not just flipping each other off at it's most harmless. In general all comes back to war and battling in psychology form from our historical turbulances and historical systems perpetuating it which we need to mentally balance out else get constantly flanked or sucked into wondering why everyone is so stupid or uncaring. Sort of real social like social work knowing this seem like a totally different department but it isn't going full circle as humans (or maybe you don't have better humans in mind?).

Better users?

Everyone here seems caring, but can overlook this people work of which is like a hard mix of many things (upper levels of evolution). "Better users" is the message despite it sounding strange, but coming from "who cares" society totally makes sense to give what we people are lacking from all cold 'systems'.
Less-caring ways = less caring.

This is what people perhaps have avoided for all of history - the people work instead putting a system to communication without the care. Think of what admins or techies do but also don't do (and even avoid). There are good examples who instill and even purify logic in their responses because literally someone has to do it until all of us can even if it looks a bit , with logic it's caring in the right and reasonable sense while looking at computers and binary code all the time is much less able.

Once using what we have humans in mind more directly and more often (call it human logic upgrade, direct examples to learn from, better samurais, improving the real way of life and our own code of conducts to work around users every day) then as a doubling effect () or domino between us all we can 'solve' 'society' (again sound funny but we do have to embrace responsibility) without expecting everyone to become a social worker or therapist full-time... Each server, person can provide the therapy backed by maintainer / stewards of what works already and then just grows better humans and interactions and optionally mediates all fallacies as it's priority which is at the heart of many arguments and misguided work if you really look at it. Provide better education, dedicated- and it's WIN:WIN for all but BigTech who can't use software against us ((your later developments I don't know and is somewhat needing more dependencies so going for better adults and therefore children is by far the better strategy much like how religion is strong but the lesser kind based of logic and acceptance for each to be helped choose a better way rather than left feeling in the void which many say often or even leave and then come back from lack of finding better people).

THERE IS NO TECHNICAL SOLUTION FOR PEOPLE'S LOGIC AND LOGIC ABILITY... AT HOME, WORK, AND MAKING BETTER FRIENDSHIP FROM STRANGERS AND MAINTAINING THAT AS BETTER 'SOCIAL' WHICH IS EVENTUALLY A BETTER SOCIETY
Do I have something wrong there? Honestly let me know...

Unless I see something really revolutionary in computers without the attack patterns (including external computers), it's human mind and human work we should be strengthening every way we can and that is not computer-related now more than ever measurably by how we see people using (abusing things) even software and the many google youtube links allowing leakage and even funding our direct opponents (this is no jokes, the maths says millions of users multiplied by many commercial links which we can educate or provide alternative links for even along side the original links). Fundamentals (where the money goes to and who also).

Another way to phrase it (without bashing anything) is:
Lack of human togetherness, human , and basic friendliness render even the most evolved software as USELESS. Please let me know if I can be wrong in that as it seems 100% and shows us where the time is really needed (with people not computers) with 100% of my respect to you all. Again let me know how I could be wrong as I got here by being able to change opinion if ever someone took a bit of time to say "More years coding the same things here helps people in this way... more than we have now."

I think a good acid test is to say that: "if you are using google daily within your own platform(s) or protocol then you might be clearly going backwards not least intellectually but as of users and funnels and fuels the wrong people". and as the real division / Man-in-the-middle attacks siphoning all that is happening as transactions are tracked and taxed by it rending us weak.

The users of all things need better understand and culture of what they use and why they shouldn't.
