ChatGPT is a human conversation simulator, not an information system or a knowledge base.

It has no understanding of anything: it only outputs plausible responses.

Because ChatGPT has no understanding of anything, it does not know what things like “a source” or “a true statement” are.

Do not trust its directions.

Do not ask an intermediary who has no capacity to understand information to explain it to you.

You will waste time and make mistakes.

Instead, go to your university library and look it up yourself, with the help of your local librarians.
Actual information is contained in brains, documents and databases.

Further:
Formatting citations and bibliographies means presenting metadata according to formal style instructions.

This is not natural language.

ChatGPT will make errors, which will take time to track and correct.

Instead, use a reference manager, such as Zotero.

It will format things reliably, exactly as expected.
Just clean up the references’ metadata as you collect them, and then your bibliographies will not contain mistakes.

ChatGPT is a human conversation simulator, not an information system or a knowledge base (?)

@cdarwin @bibliolater I like all the sentences Chuck but a small thing to consider...

"Information system and knowledge base" it is possibly - even if it's a from a side connected / attached thing...

So yes "only outputs plausible responses" and similar, but kind becomes high enough as guesses to 'help' give potential set of answers to people (while them) - so while I'm not support it, I'm just saying towards helping bridge this to the casual user maybe something different in that first line or somehow differently as people do get "information' and "knowledge" from it... and will accept even 75% or whatever accuracy if they think they can spot errors or choose... and even users help correct / perfect it so it will get better... (again without agreeing with it I'm thinking purely factually)

Actually many things could be called info system / knowledge base similar to any I.T connected thing, while true to what you say we use them (search engine etc) and users as sources also blurs all that too...

The danger is also the people behind ChatGPT which we don't even see faces of or what they do with all this input. We need to see them / their products are all people either way and mention

- the tech exploits people by by accepting inputting search terms or looking at their look-ups / work data all the same time to mine them and like a / type 'assistant' which at the same time 'assists' the owners and THEIR systems to find our data and more about you the u$er...

Some people don't mind or even fuel things if it gets them ahead in _some_ ways... and I know anti- people even using it which is like the forever-strange thing - but people go for I guess when it's given in such a easy to access input box....

Thoughts welcome...
