INVENTOR OF THE KNIFE: this is the greatest thing since torn bread

82% of people online can scroll right by a post without correcting an obvious error. The other 21% can’t help themselves.

EVERYTIME I read this story, on @ProPublica it blows my mind. Using junk 'science' like that ro convict someone is just wrong.

I'm older so I remember things. Everything you see happening today should be understood this way:

The top tax rate used to be 90% in order to prevent the really rich from destroying democracy.

The corporate tax rate was 50% because corporations exist to serve society.

AND the inheritance tax was really high to keep family dynasties from gaining power over us.

"Fair Use Creep Is A Feature, Not a Bug" go EFF!

"In Hachette v. Internet Archive, four of the biggest publishers in the world, are trying to shut down Controlled Digital Lending, which allows people to check out digital copies of books for two weeks or less...

Supported by authors, libraries, and scholars, the Internet Archive has explained that CDL is a lawful fair use that serves copyright’s ultimate purpose: enriching our common culture."

As today GOP celebrates overturning Roe v Wade—a reminder that 9 of the top 10 states with the lowest infant and maternal mortality rates are Dem states who protect reproductive healthcare access, and 9 of the top 10 states with the highest infant and maternal mortality rates are GOP states who ban reproductive healthcare access.

Actions speak louder than words. The GOP isn't actually pro life, they're pro control of women.

This is genius Albert Einstein who refused to speak at white colleges and at the end of his life spoke exclusively at black universities
"The separation of races is not a disease of colored people but a disease of white people. I do not intend to be quiet about it.

@msw @jiva @mrzaius @uliwitness It seems to me that if those Reddit posts are accurate, Amazon created this program purely out of self-interest.

Perhaps a word choice that is too harsh on my part?

I am open to that.

I suppose that, at the end of the day, it does not matter much how it is defined.

If small charities got paid, I am not going to knock Amazon for that.

Sad to see AmazonSmile go then, I guess... as those charities may not receive what they did before.

I am annoyed at how much coverage of these recurring "Big Gorilla lays off around 10.000 people" is basically just a rehash of the company press release, with not a single journalist asking how it's possible that all of these big tech companies made the same exact mistake of hiring too many people, while simultaneously showing record profits.

Like, if a 'rigorous review' finds 12.000 redundancies, why does nobody question leadership about how this was allowed to happen?

Not one critical note.

It would be good for our multi-layered software stacks to not continue slothfully sponging up all available CPU cycles as though tomorrow wasn't going to happen.

Stack layer consumers could provide helpful harsh judgement and feedback to stack vendors. "How much power does your product consume?" should be part of evaluation. This is one productive way of ending climate silence.

Look to OS kernel devs for examples of virtuous economy?

These emergencies were not actual emergencies so I commend the court.

Three Oregon universities decided not to renew their Elsevier subscriptions at the end of 2022.
dailyemerald.com/news/pressing

"Students & faculty may experience delays in having access to requested Elsevier articles, said [University Librarian & Vice Provost Alicia Salaz]. 'In the long term however, we are confident that students, researchers & scholars everywhere will benefit from a system that doesn't exploit academic labor for excessive profit,' she said."

One of the students with whom I’m working today is a constant font of bubbly happiness, and he’s one of my favorite people of all time. The world needs more unmitigated joy.

I have nothing in common with people who don’t have to turn the volume up in order to hear the tv while eating snacks.

The cat just went over to the HomePod mini on my desk, meowed at it, and Siri said "sure here is some music for you" and the cat perched on the window sill listening to Garbage and Elliott Smith.

I just want to know how long this has been going on.
