What math do neuroscientists need to know?

A highlight of #SFN2022 was Ella Batty's answer to this question. She showed off an incredible math for neuroscientists course she has developed at Harvard with open materials (ebatty.github.io/MathToolsforN) and discussed her amazing work with Neuromatch Academy (compneuro.neuromatch.io/)

Her SFN slides are here: osf.io/s94b2

@freemo I'd be very keen to join that new instance, will keep my eyes peeled 👀

@freemo what caused the delisting? Is this because the server doesn't use a blocklist/is a 'free speech' oriented server?

I worry about this instance migrating to Pleroma (even if, w/ something like the Soapbox FE it'd be miles prettier) it might be seen as a reason for mastodon.social to block us. A stupid reason, but a reason nonetheless.

@sam@fediscience.org contacting Netflix execs rn omg

@nbatalha on first thought I thought this was an LGBT post bahah

@PhDMarie ahhh don't feel pressured to! I just got excited because I love listening to podcasts and barely anyone listens to science podcasts bahah 💀💀💀 It's a small community 😩

#Introduction
Hi all, I am Elisabeth Bik, @microbiomdigest on Twitter. I am a Dutch/American microbiologist with a PhD from Utrecht University (not an MD).

In 2019 I started working for myself. I specialize in #ImageForensics, i.e. searching for image problems in published scientific papers, #ResearchIntegrity and #ScienceMisconduct.

I will start here by crossposting from Twitter (if allowed). Hope to meet and discuss problems in science papers with you here!

@ElisabethBik omg!!! I follow you on Twitter. Now, if only Retraction Watch joins Mastodon...

Also, super sorry about that French fraudster pestering you! That article he wrote was bonkers :(( Thanks for all you do, and I hope to see some of your little image challenges here!! :))))

Excited to hop on the train! I look forward to connecting with others to discuss exciting research, , , and any you are into at the moment.

@PhDMarie I'm a neuro major, but weirdly enough I enjoy listening to paelontology/evo bio podcasts. I cannot explain why lmao.

Loving ~
- I Know Dino
- The Primordial Soup Pot
- Common Descent

I irregularly listen to ~
- Nature Podcast (by the journal...)
- Quanta Science (from the online news site)
- All in the Mind (psychology show from australia's national broadcaster, ABC)
- Hidden Brain
- Big Biology
- Freakonomics Radio
- Probable Causation (by a crime economist interviewing other crime economists... Very academic, not general audience oriented IMO)

Might also recommend some science adjacent shows ~
- Secretly Incredibly Fascinating (a comedy show about everyday thinhs that are, well... Secretly incredibly fascinating LOL)
- FiveThirtyEight Politics (it's about US polling, can get punditty. But they start most eps with a good/bad use of polling segment,,, sometimes on some silly polls, always makes you think!)

Aaaaand given that you interview ppl, I might share the podcast which inspired me to pursue a biology degree ~ Tech Tonics. I don't think it runs anymore, but it interviews people working in healthcare technology/venture capitalism. I just thought the co-hosts had this electric energy to them, almost all the interviews were brimming with joy and humour and fun :)

@Catrina_Hacker Love the article!

I'd be really curious to know how motor learning works for them. Or like, to what extent they 'identify'/feel like they control their arms (though that's almost impossible to answer lol)... SUCH unusual creatures ahah

@akuersten@mstdn.social that sounds fascinating! I was reading the other day [1] that jurors put too much weight to DNA evidence. [2]

And I'm wondering: to what extent is it the responsibility of lawyers/courts to contextualise data to non-experts? Or like, is evidence of mental illness better conveyed through other kinds of evidence, like expert testimony?

Your paper sounds interesting, might have a read of it some time later this week :)

Heyya! For sake of an I'm an undergrad hoping to follow other nerds/academics working on topics I'm interested in. I'm not an expert in the things I list ~ just an enthusiast.

As far as hobbies go, I listen to lots of music, and podcasts. I enjoy Eurovision. I enjoy visiting art galleries. Love crime dramas and crime fiction. I also have an interest in politics, especially re: environment, LGBT rights, women's rights, free speech and academic freedom. If Twitter doesn't go bunk, hopefully I won't talk about those things here.
