ChatGPT can write a syllabus!

When I’m interviewing candidates, I watch where they look on after asking a question that requires thought. If they “stare off” and avoid eye contact for a moment, I know they are giving their answer some thought, so I should pay particular attention to it.

We are at the point in the semester where requests begin with, “I know I should have asked about this earlier,” and end with “will it be done tomorrow?”

The problem with competence: your area of responsibility is perceived to be problem-free, so support for it is cut.

Discussing generative AI with faculty: "Figuring out this is going to be harder that we think, and we think it is going to be hard."

What’s wrong? I just “doom scrolled” for 5 minutes before a meeting started, and I did not see a single post about ChatGPT.

Human actions must be interpreted in light of human culture. Facts must be interpreted in light of theory scientific theory.

Technologies (any technologies) rarely transfer into other places/ cultures in the ways we expect.

I left teaching almost 7 years ago. I really miss coming in to find the copier jammed on Monday mornings.

I actually used a “buying lots of fruit” problem when I taught math… it was based on my son’s experience as a clubhouse manager in baseball. Just giving that context of a real-world situation helped students pay attention--- not all but some.

The more you understand, the less you know.
