In 2011 I happened across the story of the 1970s "Stop de Kindermoord" protests in the Netherlands. It was forgotten history. No-one had covered this subject in the English language in decades and it was rarely mentioned in Dutch.
Protests about the lack of safety for children on the streets became a highly effective movement which fed into the safe cycling infrastructure which we have today. Nowadays, most Dutch children cycle independently in relative safety, to school as well as to visit friends etc.
I'm happy to see that this subject has been picked up by many other people in the last ten years, though sadly it still hasn't been translated successfully into other countries' policies.

I'm working on a project for the Open Data Institute about #Responsible #Data #Stewardship. We're interested in the relationship to terminology such as '#DataEthics' (is there a difference?) and whether it's possible to develop #frameworks of #BestPractice.
I realise this is a key area of interest for people here and a live issue more generally. We'd be interested in people's thoughts / opinions and whether there are resources we should be aware of.
Here's more detail https://theodi.org/article/framework-for-responsible-data-stewardship/
A well named shagbark hickory, Carya ovata. Apparently, little bats will roost under the sections of bark.

this is the crux of the matter. Imagine the response by @lufappul@twitter.com, the community, donors, students, funding agencies, if these letters had been available on Feb 1. The decision to seal these letters was enormously consequential. It ruined people's lives. https://twitter.com/AlexUsherHESA/status/1597324065890762752

More evidence that “racial disparities” aren’t resolved by income gains. Making more money doesn’t save women & babies racialized as Black from unjust maternal/infant outcomes. Racism is facilitated by, operates through & exacerbates economic inequality but isn’t reducible to it. https://twitter.com/smilleralert/status/1597224865999704065

If you ever had a vaccine, injection or surgery, you are indebted to the ancient & wondrous horseshoe crab.
Why? Its blue blood contains Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) which clumps at contact with bacterial toxins. Animals are caught for their blood to test the sterility of medical equipment & injections.
Unfortunately the harvest is unsustainable & populations are in decline. An effective synthetic substitute has been available for 2 decades & we just need the biomedical industry to switch.
Almost two years of destruction. Dozens of programs closed. Hundreds of jobs lost. Thousands of students' futures overthrown. Millions of dollars shoveled into private pockets. Never let these betrayals be forgotten. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbury/laurentian-exits-creditor-protection-1.6666713
I’ve worked in and for hundreds of cities all over the world. The cities that are doing amazing and innovative things aren’t cities with ideal weather, or topography, or size, or demographics, or wealth, or regulatory systems/powers, or even politics.
They’re the cities that have stopped making excuses.
#NatureEscapes Day 5: Stripes left, solids right. Amazing how unconcerned many large mammals are by observers in large protected areas in #Tanzania. They are cautious outside parks. Lionesses tried to take a zebra soon after, for which we had front row seats (but *just* missed - actually took down the zebra, but were startled by something, and the zebra zipped away, thanking its lucky stars). #luckyZebra #chillElephants

“On Sept 15, a company controlled by developer Michael Rice bought the property for $80M. The agent promoted it as a ‘prime land-banking opportunity’ … a person with the name Michael Rice donated more than $10.5K to the PC Party since 2018” 🤔 https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-sales-of-greenbelt-land-raise-questions-for-ford/ #onpoli

Until a few weeks ago none of us knew @fordnation@twitter.com was about to hand over chunks of #Greenbelt to his billionaire developer buddies or gut broader environmental protections w #Bill23. If he gets away with this, none of protections we hold dear for clear air, water, nature are safe

Things have improved, but changes are still needed.
From 2016-2021 pop growth of Ottawa area was 9% - the downtown was just 7%, the suburbs grew 21%!
When it’s more difficult & costly to densify, sprawl occurs, which is more environmentally degrading and costlier for the city.

What’s the solution?
The 15-minute city. The idea that most daily urban needs are within 15-minutes walk, cycle, or public transit - work, home, shops, entertainment, and healthcare. With robust public transit connecting neighbourhoods.
This requires less restrictive zoning.
