Hey! I was on TV. Check out this episode of the #WaterBrothers about #wetlands We must #conserve the precious remaining #wetland #habitat. https://youtu.be/RoGGwIy5pcg #conservation #biodiversity #climatechange #climate
Taking concrete #action to solve a local problem can really be empowering when the large #environmental challenges have you feeling overwhelmed and powerless. So can connecting with like minded folks and enjoying fresh air in a #greenspace. So, come out and join our annual #wetland clean-up. Or if you’re not in #waterloo , consider organizing your own! I promise you’ll feel good
#wetland #ecologist, why post so much about the #housing minister and the #housingcrisis ?
#urban development is a major driver of #wetlandloss in #ontario and the Provincial Policy Statement (under the Planning Act) is the source of protection for Provincially Significant #wetlands. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing is the lead Ministry for the PPS as well as policy instruments like the #greenbelt Plan.
Housing matters to wetlands.
I just learned about #what3words - a 3-metre square grid system that uses a 3 word address to easily and memorably #communicate precise location information globally. Very helpful for #fieldwork in remote locations and #safety plans. The words are random, but coincidentally, the door to the building where our #wetland #ecology lab is based is at ///indoor.roaming.aquatic !

Give this a👂. The Pointer #podcast about #wetland conservation, #scicomm , and finding #optimism to combat #ecologicalgrief. Journalist Rachel Morgan and I talk to host Joel Wittnebel

#worldwetlandsday is over, but there is still much work for us to do. #today this story came out in The Pointer in which I am interviewed about #wetland #conservation. https://thepointer.com/article/2023-02-03/save-ontario-wetlands-aims-to-provide-crucial-resources-while-conservation-authorities-are-under-attack-by-ford-government

#today I’m excited to see the final #WOTUS rule is up and #SignificantNexus is in!! This is important for #wetland #conservation. Credit due the important work on Geographically Isolated #Wetlands and their tremendous value for #WaterQuality (lots of #canadians were involved in that too!). I’m not #American, but when you lie down next to an elephant 🐘 something, something.
Attention #wetland #scientists! @KirkwoodLab and I are excited to be hosting a session at #iaglr23 in #toronto (May 8-12) on Mighty #Wetlands as #Keystone #Ecosystems. Abstract submissions for posters and oral presentations are now open

Don’t worry, we’ll remind you in the New Year. You have until *January 27* to apply.
When we talk about #wetland #values, it’s important to understand that #value is the product of the #ecosystem #function AND the number of people who #benefit from the function. So, if a wetland slows down the flow of runoff, that’s a function, but if it does that upstream of your house during a major storm, THAT’S when it has value. Sure being near so many ppl causes stress and effects their integrity, but it also means they benefit A LOT of people. More people visit them, learn from them too!
Today I’m remembering how hard we fought to protect #DuffinsCreek #CoastalMarsh on #LakeOntario.
I’m thinking about all the other #WorkhorseWetlands people take for granted in our urban and rural areas. They are working hard to purify #water and prevent #floods, but do we adequately value them?
Today, why not tidy up your local #wetland? Stop 🛑 that litter from becoming #Microplastics or harming #waterfowl. Bring some garbage bags and some friends and do a clean-up. It will feel amazing to actually make something better with your own hands.
