@irgarner Republicans are still going to win both the House and the Senate. even if by smaller than expected margins This is very bad news and is particularly bad news for Ukraine given their stated intentions to stop Ukraine aid.

A great twitter thread on Russia using ethnic minorities as cannon fodder in .
twitter.com/ChrisO_wiki/status

among other things:
"According to one of the surviving Baskhirs, they were at the front line for two and a half weeks. They were not even given ammunition, but had to scavenge it from supplies left behind in the forest by other Russian troops. Their weapons were old and unusable."

One of my favorite papers is a paper by Milnor "On manifolds homeomorphic to the 7-sphere" from 1956.
scribd.com/document/75338163/J
It's only 7 pages long (8 with bibliography). Milnor showed that there exists a smooth 7-manifold homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the 7-sphere. The proof is absolutely beautiful and has influenced much of the development of high dimensional topology to this day.

By way of #introduction, (or #introductions), I'm a writer. I write a column on science for the New York Times, and I also write books. ( carlzimmer.com/books/ ) The pandemic has taken up a lot of my working attention since early 2020, but other aspects of biology have obsessed me in previous years, & I now have some time for them again. Neanderthals, aliens, CRISPR, ecological collapse, etc.

Still pondering how best to use Mastodon. (I haven't deleted my Twitter account, at least not yet.)

One of the *many* reasons to vote today if you an American.

Hi Mastodon world! I write about really grim Russian topics. My next book is about how Russia’s regime is sucking kids into the fascist vortex and turning them into little social media warriors with guns and a lot of resentment.

Is this bad, cause it seems bad

RT @CaseyNewton@twitter.com

More news: Twitter Blue only had around 100K active subscribers, and if the company goes forward with its plan to reduce ads by half the new Blue could actually LOSE Twitter money, at least in the US

Worth reading if only to get a feeling for how many companies track precisely where you are at every moment of the day.

With Twitter's change in ownership last week, I'm probably in the clear to talk about the most unethical thing I was asked to build while working at Twitter.

Reminder that there is no credible substantive case against voting by mail. Republicans are trying to fuck it up because it makes voting easier & lots of Dem constituencies use it. Nothing is hidden. washingtonpost.com/elections/2

@jmendelsohn glad to see you on mastodon. You are one of my favorite follows on twitter.

@kemuri thanks. didn't know about this. it's something but not a substitute for a true verification system. I do realize the latter would require a lot of resources but it seems to me Mastodon will have to deal with it sooner or later just as twitter had to.
