The world is so dreadfully managed, one hardly knows to whom to complain.

@peterdutoit @juddlegum verification yes, it's possible. verification on twitter was introduced in the first place after Tony La Russa sued them over impersonator accounts. but at the very minimum it will drive away advertisers. they want brand safety and this is the opposite.

@herid Qoto is very unlikely to go block mastodon.social, as we maintain a largely no-block stance. We believe that the users have all the tools at their disposal to mute/block bad actors.
But yes, we cannot speak for other instances, and we largely disagree with the more strict ones.

this is the kind of thing that worries me about mastodon. I follow a lot of people on mastodon.social. don't really want to lose them. but moderation there is an issue. as it will be on any instance that gets too big. what's the solution to this?

Since so many people are joining mastodon.social right now, including some really unpleasant-to-deal-with people, and since mastodon.social doesn't have a lot of hands-on moderation to dissuade the unpleasant folks, some other instances are talking about "defederating" from mastodon.social. That would mean that, if your account is on mastodon.social, folks on other servers would be less likely to get/read your posts.

RT @francisjfarrell@twitter.com
Russian telegram channels saying Ukrainians are smashing the crossing points where thousands of Russians are retreating across the Dnipro. This looks huge.

@riskybusiness absolutely.
and it's not just the question of features. it remains to be seen if mastodon can scale effectively. can it do so with the current model without large staff and advertisers? that's far from clear. so far it has avoided a lot of issues twitter has had to grapple with (trolls, bots, impersonators, hate speech) because of its small size. but this won't last if it keeps growing. there is definitely an opportunity for a competing service.
@riskybusiness I'm keeping a list of privacy and safety issues, and oh boy is Mastodon not ready.
Almost all of the positive attributes are enforced by convention, not code. Gonna be a wild ride here.
Twitter just lost heads of security and compliance… Feels like the migration to Mastadon is on in earnest. Now I’m really curious to see what big tech and large media platforms do, the opportunities are huge. I suspect the culture here around things like CWs is about to get absolutely steamrolled by all the new users, too… and someone will start building the features Mastadon doesn’t want to: search etc. It’s going to be an interesting six months.
