t.me/liveukraine_eng/2286 ⚠️🇺🇦 Ukrainian military accused Russians of using chemical weapons - K-51 aerosol grenades. "The occupants are dropping chloropicrin grenades from drones on our defenders in the East. In order to protect themselves from the strong irritating effect of prohibited ammunition, the marines kept their positions in chemical protection means," the 36th separate marine brigade stated. Politico put it this way:

"The former president and the person that polls show is still the most likely GOP presidential nominee in 2024, today on Truth Social called for the suspension of the Constitution."

This poses a problem for journalists who would cover the 2024 election. By what logic can that coverage proceed?

Neutrality makes sense only within a constitutional order that his candidacy is trying to upend. "Just report the news" pretends this will be a normal campaign.

Second, clean energy technologies are becoming increasingly cost-competitive with fossil fuels. This means that reducing emissions is becoming more affordable and accessible for governments and businesses. 3/

Every one of us should be angry that one of Ontario’s largest children’s hospitals has had to call in the Red Cross to help with staffing.

Every one of us should be demanding that our government immediately invest more resources into our healthcare system.

Perhaps Mathstodon can be a place to note some folklore #MathTricks that are useful but too trifling to devote an entire paper to. Here's one (that I recalled on browsing MathOverflow mathoverflow.net/questions/435): If one is trying to prove a Hilbert space identity or inequality which is invariant under a unitary group action, one can often reduce "for free" to the irreducible components of that group action. @tchambers interesting. that seems to be a much higher rate than among the people I follow. How do you measure retention btw?

@tchambers Interesting data but it doesn't measure some important statistics. Namely, how many of the people trying various new platforms are sticking with them. From my own highly unscientific observations vast majority of people I follow who created accounts are not actively using it. many definitely just went back to as I see them regularly posting there. but not all. Some say they are on Post and a few on Hive. On the other hand Mastodon IS still growing at a steady pace. It remains unclear where it's all heading.

We look at which sites users are adding to their Twitter bios, posting to their friends about & downloading apps for.

Please do boost this, and love to hear any comments or feedback on it!

I wish the default iOS Mastodon client let me save draft posts.

Any of the other clients do that? 🤔

t.me/washingtonpost/1722 ⚡️🇺🇸 Pentagon eyes major expansion of Ukraine military training.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and other top Pentagon officials are weighing a major expansion in training for the Ukrainian military, a move that could significantly enhance its ability to evict Russian forces from occupied areas even as it deepens U.S. involvement in the war.
The plan, under discussion for weeks, according to (more) #Ukraine #News #War #Russia

I am listening to Collected Stories of A.C. Clarke on Audible. Fascinating experience. I've read a lot of them many years ago and they read very differently now. The collection spans a wide period. The earliest stories are from 1940s. Some didn't age well but still all are interesting. I particularly enjoy the ones with math twists like the Wall of Darkness which involves non orientable manifolds. Clarke didn't quite get the math right but it's understandable.

March 24: a deluge of “one month of war” coverage
August 24: a handful of “six months in” features
November 24: 9 months and nary a whisper
Feb 24 2023: a trickle of “one year since the invasion”

Then deafening silence, disturbed by the odd cry of an event.
