Washington Post will be creating their own instance. They will add #mastodon accounts to journalist profiles.
Institutional #journalism embracing the #fediverse is important.

💥Heads Up! #SENIORS
#Ontario Conservative's are now swapping your original brand-name drugs with cheaper ‘biosimilar’ drugs.
The change to Ont. Drug Benefit plan will impact all seniors & people on social assistance despite concerns the switch could throw some patients off track.
The cost-savings will be create 'financial room' for the Ford govt to fund new drug therapies.

2023 public domain additions look great. @pluralistic gives an overview & background in this article: https://doctorow.medium.com/2023s-public-domain-is-a-banger-7db8919cbaed #publicdomain
@MichaelGentile @irgarner this is a repost of his twitter thread which has more pictures (they are quite wild). I think he uses some software to auto mirror twitter posts to Mastodon but perhaps it doesn't work right on threads?

Ukrainian fridge looks like this, now that blackout lasts for third day. There’re two hours of electricity deep at night and we manage to recharge all our devices. Buzz from generators coming from street shops and cafes #kyiv #ukraine

„The idea that a child born today could contract COVID 40 times before college and live a normal, healthy lifespan, is completely unsupported by what we know about this disease.”

A new dismal landmark in Putin's re-totalitarianisation of Russia. The Kremlin is preparing to ban the Moscow Helsinki Group, the legendary human rights organisation created by Yurii Orlov, Elena Bonner and others in 1976. 1/4 https://twitter.com/hrc_memorial/status/1605515652931919874

Wow.. I just read that pawoo has been taken over by the Mask Group that also runs mstdn.jp and mastodon.cloud 🤔
So.. they own now 3 of the largest instances
@LeGrand so in another 5 years or so?
@anneapplebaum "Of course whether or not we believe that NATO poses an objective threat, Russia might nonetheless feel threatened. "
#Russia is absolutely not afraid of NATO invading/ attacking it. Putin was never afraid of that and he isn't afraid of it even now. When he proclaims that NATO is a threat to Russia what he means is that it's a shield against expanding Russia's sphere of domination to the area Putin feels entitled to. Sweden and Finland were never really in that area which is why he doesn't particularly care whethere they join NATO or not. But #Ukraine is a **completely** different story. The "security" guarantee he wants is a guarantee to do whatever he wants in Eastern Europe, Ukraine most of all. This should never be granted in any shape or form.
George Hotz is an experienced coder / "lone wolf" type of hacker who joined Twitter to "fix search" in 12 weeks. 4 weeks later, he's thrown in the towel, with nothing of real impact shipped.
To me, this shows the difference between software engineering - aka working with complexity - and how "just" being good at coding is not what is needed at a place like Twitter, to succeed.
And yet, New Twitter has incentives set to only reward coding, not software engineering.
If you’re going to leave Twitter, please don’t
a) delete your account, because someone bad will steal your handle
b) delete your Tweets, because their existence doesn’t help Elon and it’s like burning the Library of Alexandria.
Twitter captures a real-time historical record of a couple of decades and the billions of individuals’ snapshots are irreplaceable.
The thought of all those tweets being erased makes me feel physically sick.
[please pass on if you agree.]
I have #Covid and I'm in isolation with my husband. All the days have merged into one, and I've just realised we're going to be isolating on Christmas Day. :(
The kids have sellotaped us into one part of the house so we don't infect them; they have the kitchen, we have the laundry, and they fling food to us below our window.
Idk if an #ActuallyAutistic 'Lord of the Flies' scenario is playing out, but nothing I can do about it!
I'm immunocompromised, please wear a mask!!
