@tao was Aristotel's thesis believed before Galileo?

herid boosted

Mathematics can raise concerns with a proposed physical theory by pointing out that it leads to discontinuities. According to popular belief, Galileo debunked Aristotle's thesis that heavier objects fall faster than light ones by an actual experiment, but in fact he proposed a continuity argument: if Aristotle was correct, connecting two equal falling masses by a string of negligible weight would double the mass of the object and thus cause it to fall much faster, which was absurd. @freemo please. there is a **very** large distinction between burning books and not helping someone spread dangerous medical quackery.

@freemo again, I disagree. bad medical info isn't just wrong, it's harmful. and that is grounds for blocking altogether IMO, not leaving it for individual people to judge. the latter is what lead to the spread of antivax propaganda on social media in the first place. I mean, would you allow an account like this to set up shop on qoto? I sure hope not.

@freemo disagree. STEM doesn't mean people are medical experts. I have lots of colleagues who think COVID is over and is now like flu. One recommended homeopathic medicine for my stomach problems. and as I said engaging with quacks is useless.

@freemo I do know I can block servers and I will block this one but I am not worried about myself. I see zero value and only harm in federating with them at server level. Engaging with any account like that is worse than futile.

came across this antivaxx garbage while searching the COVID hastag. that account is pumping harmful nonsense in quantity (garlic and honey are alternative to antibiotics etc). looked up the instance it's hosted on (brighteon.social) and it proudly proclaims that this sort of stuff is their mission. why exactly are we federated with them? @freemo

The hellscape that Bakhmut’s become after months of relentless Russian attacks is shocking & heartbreaking. Families lived here; my friends in the last block. Colored building is “Smile” kindergarten no. 40. Locals call the area район літака, or plane district, W entrance of city

China and Russia were probably better friends before the war. But since Russia is feeling rather lonely these days, it is certainly happy that China is still there.

3. Migrate from Facebook to Friendica

Do to Mark Zuckerberg what you already did to Elon Musk.

As somebody who's avoided COVID-19 for three years it's kind of depressing to think how easy it would have been for the government to get to COVID zero.

N95s for everyone and mask mandates. An actual vaccination campaign. Strict air quality rules, and a handful of targeted capacity limits where needed.

We would be fine. We'd have a society. Our hospitals would be functional. People wouldn't be dead.

It would be cheaper.

I think it’s important to repeat: you don't "have something to hide" when you put blinds on your windows or close the door when you're on the can or wear clothes.

Privacy isn't about having something to hide. It's not about keeping secrets. It's about you being the person who chooses what you reveal about yourself, and when, and to who, and the other word we have for that is "dignity". Your inherent dignity, as a human being.

Your privacy is the agency you have over your dignity.

Why the heck are we trying to peer pressure people into stopping precautions for a disease that is a top 3 killer in the US?

It’s horrible the media is more focused on trying to frame people who are masking as “hold outs”instead of investigating why political leaders prematurely dropped protections to serve corporate interests when polls show the majority still support mask mandates.
