On the other hand there is this thread (also *very* interesting) which contradicts the previous one to a degree.

@yvanspijk very cool! Of course I understood nothing without looking at the translation.

To inaugurate my Mastodon account, here's a repost of my most popular tweet to date. 😋

How did English sound 1100 years ago?

Of course we'll never know for sure, but linguists have been able to reconstruct the pronunciation of Old English to quite an extent.

Here's me reading an excerpt from a 10th century riddle using this reconstructed pronunciation:

New video from ABC news on "The challenging struggle of long COVID"

Doctors saying "It's probably nothing", "Things will improve".

Sufferers having to give up work, but then struggling to obtain disability benefits.

People pushed out of state support systems by onerous bureaucracies, beyond what people with disabilities can easily navigate.

The same experiences over and over again...

t.me/liveukraine_eng/1244 ⚠️🇺🇦 In Melitopol children are threatened to be expelled from school for refusing to thank Russian soldiers. According to Melitopol media, in one of the schools a 13-year-old student refused to write a letter to the soldiers of the Russian army with gratitude "for the liberation". The teacher threatened the child with expulsion for such an act. #Ukraine #News #War #Russia

As I recently blogged about on Patently-O, there are a large number of design patent cases being filed in the NDIL where the defendants' names are kept secret, at least initially, filed under seal in documents labeled "Schedule A."

@obi this may depend on your background. I am not at all an expert on this subject so I assumed that with near 90% of employees leaving twitter so quickly a massive outage was imminent. I know many ppl think the same.

**Very** interesting twitter thread on what may happen to .
TL;DR A massive outage is very unlikely despite all the employee departures. Cleared a number of misconceptions I had personally.

Not sure if this needs a CW, but in honor of the last official day of COP27, everyone should read this piece about the lack of water in the Amazon:

Please boost: I'm looking for literature on legal requirements for instances (moderation, data protection, liability etc.).

Especially for larger organizations/companies that want to run their own instance.

Focus on EU/Germany. Please help.

By the way, am I happy that Twitter is imploding right this moment?

As much as I'd like to celebrate -- and a part of me is -- I'm incredibly wary because:

1. Mastodon does not have the scale to successfully onboard users *that* quickly
2. The moderator-to-user ratio might be stretched too thin
3. Malicious actors might take advantage of the chaos, and undermine the Fediverse's longterm survival

Let's hope we survive this!

Ugh, these new Twitter refugees are ruining the place for long-standing community members like me who have been here for ten days.

that's quite a jump in new users in the last hour. It's been 2k or less for days.

@Pwnallthethings also people waiting for employer sponsored green cards. this process takes years and makes the functional slaves. My former roommate in US (a programmer) was working for a small company who sponsored his green card application. They had constant and large staff turnover but he couldn't leave (and was paid very little). By the time I lost touch with him he's been waiting for 4 years. I assume he got his green card eventually but I don't know how long it took in the end.

One thing that's getting a little lost in this mix, is that some of the people desperately holding on at Twitter are because they are trapped by either healthcare or visas.

That there are systemic traps that trap worker in America so they feel unable to move freely to new employers who want them and would have better pay or conditions is *nuts* and deserves a lot more attention than it gets.

@wompy @Pwnallthethings yes, but it's surprising to me this hasn't happened yet.

@Pwnallthethings is it really 90%? kind of amazing twitter is still up.

Masks work

The simplest way you can make yourself, your family, & your community safer is to wear a well-fitted, high-quality mask, such as the N95 pictured here, any time you're indoors in public, or in any crowd.
