Ukrainian defenders are driving around the battlefront in unprotected vehicles.
This leads to preventable deaths and injuries from land mines.

Though they refuse to fight, Ukraine’s allies should function as the Arsenal of Democracy and provide armoured vehicles – in abundance.

Tonight I’m reading about a new #COVID variant that’s raging through New York and Quebec right now. Of course, nobody’s paying attention. Masks? What are they? I guess COVID, like mass shootings, are merely the price we pay for freedom. When will somebody that matters stand up and say enough! The price is too high! It’s feeling more and more inevitable that COVID will catch up to my immunocompromised wife, despite our best efforts. Not a question of if, but when. But hey, freedumb!

@jturnercreative Thank you for the recommendation! I definitely plan to read more Murakami but wasn't sure what to try next.

6) When some pundits declare #COVID is no big deal, are they referring to 40% of Quebec health workers having suffered from long COVID, according to a study this year? Or are they referring to a federal study estimating 1.4 million Canadians have developed symptoms of long COVID?

5) When some suggest the elderly will die soon enough, are they referring to the 5,587 residents in long-term care institutions in Quebec who are currently suffering from more immune-evasive #Omicron COVID? Is it somehow tolerable 44 such residents died in just the last few days?

4) When some people say "stop catostrophaizing the virus, stop engaging in fear porn and move on," does that mean it's somehow tolerable that Quebec on Thursday recorded the absences of more than 3,000 health workers due to #COVID? Is that the "new normal?"

3) When our political leaders insist that we must "live with the virus," does that mean that it's somehow acceptable that two children under age 10 have died from #COVID in Quebec since Sept. 1, along with 403 hospitalizations in this age group since the start of the school year?

2) When people use the term "endemic" to describe the current situation (meaning, a "constant presence and/or usual prevalence of a disease or infectious agent in a population within a geographic area"), does that also mean accepting 14,422 #COVID hospitalizations in Quebec since Sept. 1?

1) With a day left in the year, Quebec has recorded 75.46% more #COVID deaths in the #pandemic than in 2021. Quebec has averaged 16 such fatalities per day this year. Is this what people mean when they utter the term "post-pandemic"?

Finished listening to 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami.

It’s quite good but I liked it slightly less than The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (the only other book of Murakami I’ve read). Too much filler IMO.

Also a minor personal quibble. Description of and mathematicians is really cliched. It reminds of a comment by an acquaintance that being a mathematician my job must be boring because how interesting can it be to add numbers all day.

1/ A Russian soldier fighting near Bakhmut says that President Zelensky's recent visit has inspired Ukrainian soldiers to fight with renewed vigour. Meanwhile his own side is being pushed back and are suffering heavy casualties, with 40% of his unit having been killed. ⬇️

Hard not to agree the war has been apogee of regime personalization so far. But it's dragging on, and Putin makes some effort to 'institutionalize' war effort (unified command, gov Coordination Council, 'SVO' working group, mil-tech coop comission etc.) meduza.io/feature/2022/12/30/s

@jhertzli that is not a good reason to platform them. the main thing they are up to is spreading antivaxx BS. You don't need to hand them a megaphone to find that out. besides, some people always do watch them as there are always ppl watching Truth Social, 4Chan etc.
