Mastodon this morning is now indistinguishable from my Twitter feed of about six weeks ago— except it's missing garbage tweets and abusive drive-bys.

Like many others, when Mastodon first launched, I didn't really pay attention to it and the vision @Gargron had for a decentralized social network. And I wish I did.

Now that we're here, I hope other publications can follow the @macstories approach: own your identity, control your tech, and engage with your audience everywhere.

We have lots of ideas for how we can take this further with MacStories 5.0. It feels liberating and exciting to do all of this now.

BOOST and HASHTAG like you're a birdsite bot! Since there's no algorithm on Mastodon to put stuff in front of you and others, the MOST IMPORTANT things a user can do are:

1) *Always* Boost a toot that you think is good content so your followers can discover new content and people

2) Use hashtags in *every post*, so that people can discover posts for topics they're interested in.

Let's all make Mastodon a place where it's easy to find the content you want!

The reason Mastodon names are like email addresses is because email addresses "won" over a lot of other options that I won't mention here because most people have never heard of them.

Why did email addresses win? Because they match how we think of community, at a deep cognitive and arguably biological level.

Need evidence? "Jesus of Nazareth" is basically an email address and, now, a Mastodon account name.

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.
