Symi Declaration - Future-of-the-World Checklist Rev. 1.01

"Not a Desiderata for Dreamers, but a Raft for Realists"

@iankenway

Could you please provide more context. What is this?

@Pat This is a modest revision of the first Symi Declaration - Future-of-the-World Checklist published on 7th May 2021 here on the island of Symi, Dodecanese, Greece. It arises from a number of discussions with people living on the island and elsewhere in the world.

@iankenway

I get it. It's just some kid of consensus of what those folks on that island want to see in the future, but not a plan on how to do it or anything.

Rather than publish a full manifesto, they just put it in a list. Ok.

@iankenway
I get where this list is coming from, but these ideas could be clarified/expanded on.

1. The progressive taxation they recommend would need a starting point for the upper bracket(s).
2. UBI requires something like rent restrictions to really work.
3. A market can only be truly free if monopolism and negative externalities are kept in check.
4. "No walled gardens" might not mean the same thing to everyone.
5. Sortition is a good idea, as long as it is only used to select assemblies of voters, not for directly selecting an official. For single-seat elections, I would also recommend that the assemblies use approval voting.

@Parienve Thank you so much for your thoughtful and useful comments. The Checklist obviously needs further revision as there is currently no reference to education, health and reproductive rights.

There's no informed consent without informed debate. And there's none of that while the government is controlling "muh science"
