If you’re leaving Twitter for Mastodon, here are some things you should know.

Please reblog/boost if you think this would help folks you know who are new to Mastodon. (Likes are appreciated, but won't help spread the advice)

Hi folks, please share this open rank Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Marine Aquaculture at Northeastern University! jobs.chronicle.com/job/3734337 We have a wonderful department and inclusive environment here, on top of that it's a nice place to work. We seek the broad expertise in aquaculture, including but not limited to: fisheries science; sensitivity of marine species to climate change; ECOLOGICAL AND EVOLUTIONARY GENOMICS; social science, engineering, aquaculture productivity.

This story brought a tear to my eye this morning. My father flew with Sam at Guadalcanal as part of Marine air squadron VMF-121. Not sure, but Sam was almost certainly the last surviving member of the unit.

Please don't use #Fedified! 🙏

This is what it says about itself:

"(Fedified) is *the* way to make sure that you're following the account managed by the same person you used to follow on Twitter."

It wants to be a central authority. This is dangerous, and opposite to what the Fediverse stands for.

People become dependent on a central authority, then it gets bought out by billionaires.

You can already verify your account on here without using any centralised lists:

I know many of us are balancing a ‘bonus’ social media account during this time of uncertainty, but I see a lot of professors following friends, colleagues, familiar faces on new accounts. I hope folks take the time to follow (back) #EarlyCareerResearchers, for whom the #networking is critical. The diversity of voices, perspectives, & experiences is what makes these communities effective & successful. I hope this continues. #FollowBack (every day) #ECRs

See nasty stuff in your Federated Timeline? Someone being a jerk to you, to someone else, or just in general?

Report it!

While you can always block users (and instances) for yourself, Reporting lets your admins take instance wide actions! You can report any post from any user to flag it for your mods and admins (and optionally, the mods and admins the account belongs to)

Using Report helps them keep your instance free of bad actors and gross instances. #fediTips

Placing a list of hashtags of interest in your profile keeps them conveniently located for future use, but they won't return your profile to someone else's search using those same terms. If you want people to find you through your common interests, then you will need to place that hashing list inside a post, like so.

All,

The moment has finally arrived! 🥳

@McCullohMD
@stevendavis , and I have been hard at work for the past week putting together a Mastodon instance so that we can create a backup disability and chronic illness community.

It can be found here:

disabled.social

For now, we have set up a terms of service, privacy policy, rules and best practices.

I have plans to set up a Twitter space to go through each of these with the disability community directly to add/subtract/reword things.

"Democrats don't need Georgia" is a short-sighted take, considering that if the GOP flipped one Dem-held Senate seat in 2024, the Georgia seat could serve as a firewall protecting their majority for another two years.

@Drgandalf Character limits are significantly larger on Mastodon, but I don't know if limits are uniform across all servers. I this case, I just kept writing to a logical conclusion. Definitely an advantage if you want to have a thoughtful exchange.
