Exactly 14 years ago , Satoshi Nakamoto designed the most pathetic / inefficient system ever invented by humankind : the blockchain.

Today, it weights 60 000 tons, wastes constantly 10 gigawatts .. to process less than 7 transactions per second :

Less than a 33 bps modem from 1990.

This could be joke if it didn't have such gigantic environmental impact, wasn't enabling billion dolllars ransomware industry and was not crushing thousands of lives in the process.

Okay, we know... We made fun of Adobe when its cloud service went down. We've made fun of Corel Painter and Clip Studio. We joined in the protest No AI Generated Images protest. We made our stance on NFT's clear. But this is beyond making fun of. This is EW! EW! EW!

Universal mask wearing is not a lockdown. It’s the opposite: Mask mandates make society accessible to many more people, especially those at higher risk.

Twitter was a shithole before Elon Musk. Twitter is a shithole during Elon Musk. And Twitter will be shithole after Elon Musk.

The goal of the fediverse has not been (nor should it be) to recreate some version or other of a shithole.

It can be (and is) so much more.

Some instances allow quote posting, like Qoto.org.

There are many features that are server or even software (Mastodon is not the only one) dependent in the Fediverse. Some servers allow posts as long as 65,535 characters, for example.

Journalists will never stick around this app long term sadly unless it adds quote posting. We desperately need it to communicate effectively, build...

I see some AI people trying to justify the use of copyrighted images without explicit consent by copyright owner. I think these people should read a bit about IP law before making any claim. A nice start here: s that copyright images cannot be used without consent from copyright holder. Saying otherwise is a lie. I suggest you read a bit about IP law before disseminating false claims. A nice summary copyrightlaws.com/legally-usin

TL;DR One cannot use a copyrighted image without consent. Period.

If you're a parent that got their kids Return to Monkey Island for Christmas this year, it's important to remember that you're an awesome parent.

Thank you for voting!

Seems clear people wants to see the world burning.

Well, let's see if he abides by the results of his poll as much as me of mine 😂

Should I return to Twitter only to vote to fire that guy? I will ¬abide by the results of this poll.

Please boost if you’re still masking indoors (in public places)

If Mastodon diehards want this to be The Next Place after Twitter, the move is to bend over backwards to listen to disabled and Black community about what they do and don't need in social media space.

Even if it's challenging.

Even if it makes you uncomfortable.

These are power user communities, whether folks like it or not.

At this point it looks like we will not have an operational W3C nonprofit on Jan 1. Every Director will vote their conscience, but it seems likely that the asset transfer will be rejected, leaving MIT responsible for its contracts with W3C Members (for which they have paid).

No one knows what happens then.

CNN, WaPo, NYT journalists' accounts were restored. The Intercept and independent journalists were not. We've gotten the worst of it all: the criticism of being the “mainstream media” but without the backing or protection of being the “mainstream media.”

So I understand that the bird site has started blocking links to common/known Mastodon instances, and that doesn't seem like free speech to me. So... I did a thing.

If you go to spacekaren.sucks it is now a URL shortener that blocks the twitter user agent. That means you can share that link that will redirect to your Mastodon account without the pouty baby stopping you. If you find this helpful can you boost so others can find it? #TwitterMigration #Mastodon #Musk #introduction

There are many legitimate reasons to track Elon Musk's flight coordinates, for example to offer him ads more relevant to his interests

And this editorial by @holden:

"Unfortunately, the name of JWST has tarnished the story. James Webb was a former NASA administrator who presided over some of the agency’s biggest accomplishments. But he served at a time when a program was initiated to fire LGBTQ+ employees on the basis of their sexual orientation, and he stated to Congress that these individuals were “unsuited” for employment at NASA. ..."
