🚨 Google is killing Android freedom.

Starting 2027, unverified apps can’t be side-loaded.

➡️ F-Droid harder to install
➡️ Custom APKs blocked
➡️ Google decides what runs on YOUR phone

Google’s Android is becoming Apple: Your device, their rules.

It’s time to switch to open alternatives: Graphene, Calyx, Lineage. ✊

Sin banderas, por favor. Ni palestinas ni ikurriñas.

Ni pancartas.

Officially got the word today. My employer is shitcanning all remote employees if we don't agree to set our lives on fire and move. And in the middle of a historically bad tech job market. I've sent out a ton of resumes and gotten nothing, like everyone else. If anyone needs a senior software engineer (backend primarily) who's really good at their job, hit me up. #GetFediHired

US immigration agents will have access to hacking tools from Paragon Solutions, a company founded in Israel which makes spyware that can be used to hack into any mobile phone – including encrypted applications, The Guardian writes.

"The Department of Homeland Security first entered into a contract with Paragon, now owned by a US firm, in late 2024, under the Biden administration. But the $2m contract was put on hold pending a compliance review to make sure it adhered to an executive order that restricts the US government’s use of spyware, Wired reported at the time."

"That pause has now been lifted, according to public procurement documents, which list US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) as the contracting agency."

NEW: Venezuela's President showed off his new Huawei phone and said "the Americans can’t hack it."

But Huawei phones are likely easier to hack because they run a new custom operating system, HarmonyOS. In August alone, Huawei patched 60 vulnerabilities in the OS, 13 of which were "high" severity.

“There’s bound to be many more mistakes in their brand-new code than in iOS and Android at this time,” a researcher said.

Turned off automatic upgrades on my mom’s iPhone, specifically to avoid Liquid Glass.

She’s very smart, but also 85 years old. She has visual acuity problems, is uncomfortable adapting to change, and has generally low tech-confidence.

Her phone is a vital part of her life. Yanking away the environment she’s spent years getting comfortable with would be a nightmare.

“OK! We’ve moved all your fingers to a single arm that comes out of your back. Also, you have cataracts now. Cool, right?”

I was very pleased to discover that Wikipedia provides torrents of the entire English encyclopedia and that they're only about 20GB. I really thought it would amount to more than that, and I'm happy to finally have a local copy of Wikipedia. This doesn't include media like images and audio, or userpages and talk pages, but the text is by far the most critical part to have backed up.

I doubt I'd be able to host all the media at once, but this makes a totally #P2P (or #federated) encyclopedia look very possible.

First day back teaching, already a couple of learners in my first class coughing with runny noses. Part way through the class, someone asks me, "Why are you wearing a mask?" "Um, excellent question..." #MaskUp #Covid #FloMask

One of the side-effects of the AI bubble is that we stopped talking about alternative solutions to computing problems. Everything needs to be solved with "AI" - meaning an LLM - and nobody stops and asks if there is an alternative. This drives me mad because LLMs are not only unreliable, but also shockingly inefficient. And I'm positive that for most tasks there *is* an alternative algorithmic solution that is more reliable and less expensive.

I thought I’d try to get a photo of a roadrunner running; not as easy as it might sound. It ran across the gravel but stopped running as soon as it got to the road.
