UBI in relation to genAI harms is absolutely a red herring. Even if it were implemented, when you play it out in your head it... doesn't look great. So let's talk about that?
What does UBI get you? A basic standard of living, not very fancy, still encouraging you to seek out work if you want more luxuries but at least you won't die in the streets. That's kinda what it is, definitionally. It's achieved through some level of taxation, wherever you want that to come from to make it effective, but corporations and billionaires are obvious big targets.
Setting aside the idea that both of those obvious targets are largely politically untouchable and will continue to be for the foreseeable future, what we're left with is a bunch of people who have been pushed out of work, who can only afford the very basic living standards in our society, and who have no way to climb out of that hole because all the "value" is being captured by automation, which is controlled by... the corporations and billionaires which must continue to be at least fairly profitable, and fairly filthy rich in order to be taxable and able to fund the UBI. It also removes the possibility of worker power being able to influence corporate direction in any way, which is terribly convenient.
The result of UBI in an AI world isn't a more comfortable world, it's a further-stratified world where even more people are pushed to "barely scraping by" than ever, the environment continues to be set on fire, and the worst people in the world have all the economic and political power.
Yesterday there was an all hands meeting at my company to say that we're going "AI first".
The aim is to get everybody really leaning in on LLM tools, and a working group set up to start researching new workflows and sharing them for everybody to use....
So the end of April will be my last day.
I'm planning to start actually selling some of the hardware synthesisers I've designed, as well as picking up bits and pieces of freelance work.
Hit me up if you want noises made or circuits soldered.
Putos cobardes.

VAMOS A VER Óliver.

It's really interesting how viruses succeed by exploiting weaknesses in society. A successful pandemic perfectly adapts to the culture, ultimately, and THAT'S how it survives. Not by becoming "more mild", but by embedding itself in a way that the damage is subtle and abstract and nebulous, at least anecdotally.
SARS-COV-2 has done that. Whether it kills everyone in 7 years from now from downstream consequences of infection is irrelevant because our society has no patience and no forethought and no imagination or ability to comprehend abstract risk and, because of that, it has succeeded by acting much like a Trojan horse at this point - seemingly "mild" in the acute phase for enough people to dismiss it until they join the rapidly turning-over minority of people for which infections are no longer "mild" because they dismissed the risk of the chronic phase.
SARS-COV-2 IS the disease of capitalism. In a way WE are COVID.
The German government completely refuses to tell parliament whether (and if yes, how) German federal police uses highly intrusive and unlawfully processed mass behavioral/location data from digital advertising and data brokers for surveillance purposes or not.
Deeply problematic in terms of democratic accountability.

How the BBC chose to report on the US and Israeli attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab, Iran:
1. It used “dead” instead of “killed,” softening the violence and removing agency.
2. It relied on passive construction, carefully avoiding naming the perpetrators — the United States and Israel.
3. It added “Iran says,” subtly framing the massacre itself as an allegation rather than an established event.

Two things:
1. If we’re sinking Iranian ships in the open ocean using submarines, this is an offensive war, and the President needs to declare war and go to Congress.
2. If you sink a ship with a torpedo, and there are no other threats around, you are obligated to search for, and rescue, survivors. The US Navy needs to stop being complicit in Hegseth’s war crime spree.
I got down from the bird and jumped onto the mastodon. Went from #science to software development, mostly #webdev.
