This is the result of a political culture that whines about "purity tests."

World War II movies often make out that there were only a few brave Germans who stood up to Hitler; all other Germans are portrayed as either being complicit or cowed.

Turns out that wasn't true. Similar to America today, there were many Germans who hated their leader and tried to protest.

What I find depressing is that they failed so completely. I truly hope that today's good Americans are more successful. I'm not optimistic.

EDIT: @Giliell has let me know that very few Germans protested
