Brilliant new paper by Naomi #Oreskes, concluding that "our overall situation suggests that it does not suffice for scientists simply to supply #factual #information, and leave it at that. Scientists need as well to engage actively with the recipients of that information." https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s43538-022-00121-1
Discovered by Charles Schuchert in Alabama, this composite Basilosaurus (an early whale) has been on near-continuous display at NMNH for 125 years. #fossilfriday
Hallo! For this #FossilFriday a Christmassy slice of Prototaxites from the Devonian of Germany. Although it looks like a fossil trunk, Prototaxites was not a plant but more likely related to fungi!

A mosaic image of the iconic Pillars of Creation from two cameras aboard #JWST.
The #stars show up primarily in near-infrared, which also reveals thousands of newly formed stars – look for bright orange spheres that lie just outside the dusty pillars.
In mid-infrared, the #dust is on full display, most apparent in the diffuse, orange layers. The densest regions are cast in deep indigo hues, obscuring our view of the activities inside the pillars.

Phasing out coal means we can no longer rely on synthetic gypsum, a by-product of coal-fired power plants! A group of researchers now urge the EU to act to close this gap, by investing in research to make phosphogypsum available as an alternative https://bit.ly/3D3smU2

Hi, here is my #introduction. I am Full Professor of #Geology in the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Huelva (Spain). My work has been focused on the #mineralogy and #geochemistry of Acid Mine Drainage with particular emphasis on the Iberian Pyrite Belt.
