@RL_Dane I'll answer my own question: you could and did so. That means that either I, or qoto as a whole are blocked. That's good to know, I guess.

@RL_Dane Just a question: could you boost it yourself?

No, I didn't fav your post. I'm too busy writing a reply to it, because I think you and your post deserve that I use a bit of my time to tell you that I appreciate it or (most likely) that it stinks in a way that won't offend you, because I respect you as a fellow human being and I believe you have value, even though what you said was probably bullshit.

@vaartis Even that is much more than what they will ever achieve. I only know the two Gilberts there, Ron and Dave, and they are so above that shit instance that they don't even post there anymore. The rest of them are nobodies to me. And you can use that to quote me.

@vaartis And what do you care anyway? Who's the one who got her game nominated in the Game Awards? It was you, not most of them.

@vaartis Seriously, you're not blocked. They're just assholes.

@toxision Tut seems like a pretty good and lightweight application, but it still lacks a SlackBuild (that I know of), which may make it easy to install, but harder to maintain in .

@nreygel @Whalebird @tootleapp @jsamwrites @angrylinus

@nreygel Maybe. That was implied in the “easier to use” part.

Please let me know your thoughts about the applications you decide to try. I'm interested.

@ceoln Yes, they serve as acknowledgements, but think about how many other aspects of communication they leave out: an emoji reaction adds meaning. It's not just that the other person received your post, they had an actual human reaction to it.

Then we have the repost. A repost again has meaning. There is someone who thought your idea (or your meme) had merit enough to share it with other people. That's low effort too, but it implies a decision-making process. The other person weighted the pros and cons (what you said may be controversial and paint them in a bad light by association) and actively decided to share your post.

Finally, there's the reply, which even supersedes emojis and reposts: here we have a reaction too, but it's no longer low effort. The other person took the time to think about what you said and either appreciate it, or disagree with it and (most importantly) tell you why. Either way, it's awesome, because it sparks a human connection no matter how brief.

Favs don't have that. They only provide a small dopamine rush that tends to vanish with time, as all things.

You know what? If you really think about it, favs serve no useful purpose on Fedi. They don't have any real meaning or significance. Emoji reactions make much more sense, because they both serve as an acknowledgement and a meaningful response. Any bot can fav your posts, but only a human can react appropriately to them.

Mastodon is really lagging behind other platforms as a useful means of communication between people.

@nreygel Actually, they can't have more functionality by definition (either they implement all of the API, like the web client, or just a part of it), but they can be easier to use, have some kind of integration with other programs, or be less memory-hungry than a modern web browser.

@nreygel I'm pretty well served by Seamonkey, but you can use Firefox or Falkon instead. If you're an Emacs user, there's mastodon.el (codeberg.org/martianh/mastodon), and if you prefer a TUI, @tut looks good.

@vaartis You can try a safer, but less scientific approach, then: use his work hashtag. I won't mention it here, but you can read it in almost everything the dude reposts. He clearly follows it.

And thanks for the kind words. If I ever turn to the dark side, I'll change my pfp to Ms. Endive or something so you can be warned.

@vaartis After conducting a very thorough investigation (which mostly consisted on looking at the posts in his profile for a couple of minutes), I'm doubling down on my previous opinion: he's just a self-important asshole.

But don't (ever) take my word for it. Whenever you want to know whether your posts reached someone or not, ask me to insult them and then quote post the insults mentioning them and saying something like: “Look what this horrible person said! I'm gonna block him and you should do the same! He's probably dangerous!” If after a day or two I'm blocked, that means he got it.

@vaartis As a mostly reply guy, I've been experiencing for a while more and more cases of people not even acknowledging my posts, but I attribute them to a) the other person being rude (that would be the case of the Godot maintainer), and/or b) most threads getting unmanageably large due to the influx of new users.

There could also be a c) option, namely, a change in the culture (i.e., people coming from Twitter not feeling the need to acknowledge most mentions).
