@kaia Why would he think something like that? I mean, as long as you give it to him like a normal person (as opposed to smiling awkwardly while refusing to make eye contact, for instance), why would anyone get any ideas?
@hund I still use @privacybrowser myself. It's perfectly fine for my needs. (Though I'd like it to have a nice searx instance as default homepage instead of what it has now.)
Whenever I want to accces the web “like a normal person” I don't use my phone. I turn to my desktop computer.
By the way, I didn't mean this comment as a rebuttal of what you said. I just felt like stating my own opinion out loud without aiming to change yours.
@lydiaconwell Can you elaborate, please?
Time for the formal #GetFediHired post!
I have varied developer experience going back to the 90s. Front, back, apps, engines. I've spent a lot of time on game design tools -- game languages and VMs and interpreters.
If you want to build a toolset for your users to go creatively wild, we should talk. Doesn't have to be games.
(I recently spent a couple years building a narrative/dialogue engine for a multiplayer game, but a big layoff hit. Now I'm looking again.)
Thanks.
@trinsec
> they all convey a message of some sort anyway which is better than a silent treatment.
And that's why I enjoy replying to people who take the time to reply to me. I honestly appreciate it (even when they disagree with what I said), and I don't think a like can convey that.
@trinsec I don't feel the need to have emoji reactions, but at least they carry some meaning. A like, on the other hand, has none, and even if it did, it would be a very shallow one.
I could be liking your post to signal acknowledgement, or maybe to bookmark it. I could also be liking it ironically, as a lot of people did with my OP.
Whichever it is, my point stands. I get no dopamine rush from likes and no connection with other people either, so, to me, they're useless.
@1iceloops123 We do have actual bookmarks at qoto. I don't know about other instances.
@dcc Have a like, then.
If these people weren't blocking 80% of the Fediverse, maybe they would find out about emoji reactions and realise why _likes fucking suck_.
Likes are meaningless by themselves. “Oh, so you've read what I wrote? Well, I assumed as much, given that I had just _mentioned_ you in my post.”
In my opinion, these people are addicted to the dopamine rush, which is precisely why I ask people NOT to like my posts. If you really, _really_ liked it, leave a comment. That way a real connection can be established between us, which is the point of a social network. And if you think it might be of interest to others, boost it. But likes? They make no sense.
@Miaourt Fair enough, I guess. But I'm pretty sure they will defederate from everyone else at some point, at least _de facto_. Better to ask your friends to leave that normie hellhole, in my opinion.
@Miaourt I assumed silencing meant you could still see people you followed.
@Miaourt All the cool kids are doing it already, so what's stopping you?
@freemo That was quick! Thanks!
More spam from mastodon.social coming up! Can we finally silence them permanently, please, @freemo?
@lore Yeah, there are a couple of examples of that in my own code. My rationalisation is that at least in SO they're humans.
@lore That's what I was telling someone the other day, but apparently it's a popular thing these days.
