I was searching the Internet for several old, probably out-of-print books, and I was appaled at the huge amounts of money US bookstores ask for them. Dudes, they are used books, not Picasso paintings! And shipping costs are never included. These alone range between $30 and whatever the fuck they feel like charging you.

Seriously, what kind of people does that? These are not stores. They are terrorists holding books hostage and asking for ransom.

@enigmatico It’s free. Just take it and complain later. Maybe they can use your feedback to improve future courses. Maybe they could hire you to do it better. Maybe you could get in contact with interesting people with whom you could later collaborate. I don’t know what could happen, but there’s only one way to find out.

@absolute Si las comprase online, tendría que pagar impuestos igual (si no me equivoco, no soy un experto). Otra opción, efectivamente, sería viajar fuera para comprar ciertas cosas, pero entonces la pregunta sería: ¿le valdría la pena? No lo sé. Quizá por un yate, pero ni siquiera los ricos se compran yates todos los días.

De todas formas, lo importante es que consuma cosas. El qué no es tan importante. La gracia de un impuesto al lujo es que, sí, es un impuesto al consumo y en principio tendría que pagarlo todo el mundo (también quien no tuviera tanto dinero), pero en la práctica resulta progresivo, como el IRPF, porque sólo quien tiene dinero puede permitirse consumir determinados bienes y servicios.

El mejor ejemplo de que la idea puede funcionar son los productos de Apple, que son más caros que la competencia no porque cuesten más de fabricar o sean mejores, sino porque Steve Jobs consideraba que un precio más alto los convertía en símbolos de status social. Los ricos ven cosas así y se les hacen los ojos chiribitas. Y el caso es que nadie viaja a otro país para comprar un iPhone.

Yo nunca he sido partidiario de subir impuestos a los ricos más allá de un determinado umbral, porque saben cómo esquivarlos. Me parece una mejor idea crear un impuesto a los artículos de lujo, porque eso sí que no pueden evitarlo. Un rico siempre querrá hacer ostentación de su riqueza, y para eso tiene que consumir. Un IVA del, digamos, 40% no le va a detener por la misma razón que la subida del tabaco no hace que la gente deje de fumar. El Estado ingresa y el rico no se queja (tanto), porque al cabo de un tiempo ni lo notará, como nos pasa a todos.
