USB-C has two major issues:
a. Dust collecting at the bottom of the port and then getting compacted by the connector which then eventually makes it unable to hold the cable in, unable to charge or transfer data and causes shorts across the pins[1]
b. After long-term use the connector eventually looses the ability to keep stable connection

I hate to say this, but the lightning connector handles the issue "a" better by putting the contacts on the walls of the connector, but it is still an inferior solution due to limitation on data transfer and suffering the same issues as USB-C.

The solution we should be looking at is to use magnetic connectors and wireless charging and data transfer, because metalized connectors will always have this issue on pressure fit connection and implementing a mechanical lock is stupid.
