My message to signal forum in response to deprecating SMS support from the signal app.

@kreyren
I agree. At least put the SMS functionality disable by default. That way, people could use the app without a phone number and can decide ton"lock it" to an number if they enable the SMS feature.

It'll permit your "try" thing, permit myself to keep using it, stabilize the futur "get rid of phone number" without deleting to much code at once.
The SMS feature arenall done in local so it doesn't change the server side anyway.

When you install Signal it doesn't automatically turn on SMS, or become the SMS app in the Android settings.

Someone had to turn on the feature and select Signal as the SMS app.

Thanks for the response. Must be too long since I installed Signal from scratch.
During the last years, I even try to install it for other people but since the import SMS feature was deleted, they couldn't made the switch.

A lot of people need to be able to use SMS since it's a standard. Some people even don't have a data plan yet.
#Signal was great because it could make SMS but was secure and add feature if you spoke to someone using Signal. #imessage still do great on that.
