MIT are looking to build a more equitable and inclusive culture, and have created 15 postdoctoral fellowships for engineers from groups that have been historically excluded from MIT. The scheme is open to international scholars. #WomenInSTEM #BlackInSTEM #Inclusivity

What I love about working with @somedonkey: I come to her with something (like an article) that I’m excited about and a mediocre idea for an illustration but also a bit of humility and the good sense that she needs room to move. And she circles back with a wonderful idea that I never could have thought of myself. Emphasis: it’s the illustration but also not just - it’s also the artistry behind the idea.

Can’t wait to show it!

A lot of people I follow over there are wondering what's good to join here, as they think this is a very yt space.

If anyone you know is looking for an Instance to join that's a guaranteed safe space, this is one:

In response to legitimate critiques about academia’s #whiteflight to Mastodon, how are we reflecting on our decision to jump here or add this platform to our repertoire?

Ie #histodons @histodons @histodons - which is a great list - was largely white the last time I checked.

Cishet white people have the least to lose when resisting M*sk and fascism in general. How do we keep supporting more minoritized folks?

I installed this Firefox add-on to make clicking the "Follow" button on external servers slightly less of a pain. You need to set your handle in the preferences. I also checked the no-pop-up option. You still need to click a couple extra times compared to following from your own server (Are you sure? something like that). Works for me. Thanks @rugk !
Images below show screen caps of the preferences and changed dialog.

You get annoyed by having to enter your #Mastodon handle each time you want to follow/interact with someone on a "foreign" page? I got that too, so...

I love doing the absolute simplest sanity checks when doing physics. If what you're doing doesn't pass those checks, it's wrong. Sometimes doing these checks leads to some deep intuition which you didn't have before. #TheoreticalPhysics #Science

#introduction

I’m Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, a theoretical physicist and feminist theorist with research specialties on dark matter, neutron stars, and Black feminist science, technology, and society studies. I’m a columnist for New Scientist and also author of an award-winning book The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter, Spacetime, and Dreams Deferred.

I can be found here and @chanda, and I am Vulcan at heart 🖖🏽

Hi all! Here is my #Introduction:
I am an assistant professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. I work on deep generative modeling, deep learning and probabilistic modeling for image processing, life sciences, and engineering.

Drop me a message to talk about #generativeai #deepgenerativemodeling #deeplearning #machinelearning

Time for an . Nervous systems — yours, mine, those of mice, fish, and insects and worms — are made up of populations of different kinds of neurons that communicate with one another. Current electron microscopy generates millimeter-scale volumes with the morphology and synaptic connectivity of up to 10^5 neurons. As a scientist at the Allen Institute, I am mapping out the cell types and connectivity rules found in cortex and building computational tools to help others do the same.

Hello folks, are there people here doing :python: and 🤖 for ? Comment below, I wanna follow more such people! 😀

#Introduction
Hi, I'm Lucas, a Belgian researcher at Google Brain in the beautiful Zürich. On twitter, I'm known as @giffmana.

I don't think Elon taking over Twitter is the end of the world, but I do like @sirbayes "JMLR moment" take of what's happening and wish to support it.

I post a mix of paper summary threads, hot takes, and shitposts; my main goals are to be entertaining and informative, in that order.

Cheers! 🍻

I never did an official #introduction when I came over to Mastodon!

👋 Hi I’m Chelsea, I have a PhD in Computational and Data Science and am an NTT prof teaching mostly Data Science and Computer Science but if I had to put myself in a box I’d call myself a Statistician🧮

I do a lot of SciComm through memes, pedagogical materials, TikToks, and jokes. My goal is to teach stats rigorously WITHOUT gatekeeping🥰

Mastodon growing pains... switched servers and my #introduction is gone, so let me try again, this time with hashtags!

My #cognitiveneuroscience lab studies #learning, #memory, and #sleep using empirical as well as #computationalmodeling approaches.

(Did I do it right?)

My optimism about Mastodon has been oscillating at high amplitude and frequency, but my fingers are tightly crossed that we will be able to rebuild our science community here!

I am an associate professor at the Gatsby Computation Neuroscience Unit and Sainsbury Wellcome Centre at UCL and visiting scientist at .

I think we're pretty amazing learners and my goal is to unravel the computational principles governing learning in artificial and biological systems. I'm broadly interested in the theory of deep learning and applications to neuroscience and psychology.

SigmoidS has exceeded 2k registered users!

Keep the trend going by letting your friends/colleagues know about what a cool place this is becoming for AI folks :) We'll keep scaling up the server compute as needed as more users join.

Since some have asked: you can support us monetarily by subscribing on Substack - thegradientpub.substack.com/

We are considering setting up a separate Patreon just for Sigmoid Social, but for now feel free to help us out that way if you'd like :D

Now that we've made our #introductions, let's start to get some science into our feeds! For #MLMonday, I want to share Cynthia Rudin's excellent talk on explainable #ML "Do Simpler Machine Learning Models Exist and How Can We Find Them?" in the NSF CISE Distinguished Lecture Series. Check out the NSF page beta.nsf.gov/events/do-simpler or go straight to the video players.brightcove.net/6792561

Hello! By way of an #introduction, I am

* a married Dad of two amazing young kids;
* an academic in Oxford, still going on the same problems that I did not solve during my PhD—Gaussian processes, Bayesian optimisation, Bayesian quadrature, Probabilistic Numerics (check out our book: probabilistic-numerics.org/tex);
* a co-founder of mindfoundry.ai;
* concerned with topics related to disability and chronic illness, after getting Long Covid (now recovered);
* in general, fairly weird.

#Introduction

Hi! I am a CS PhD student at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. I am broadly interested in learning based #robotics to solve problems in #agriculture.

Currently I am working on vision-based navigation of under-canopy agricultural robots (ansivakumar.github.io/learned-). These small robots could enable various precision agriculture applications like autonomous cover crop planting, mechanical weeding etc in an affordable way.

#agrobotics #fieldrobotics #robotsinthewild

Hello world, again! Since introductions are a thing...

I'm Oliver - I do computer vision and robotics for agriculture, 3D reconstruction and recognition of plant structure.

Also generally computer graphics in general, functional programming.

Also rock climbing, biking and running depending on what I'm into at any point in time.
