A month away from Mastodon! It’s been a month of waiting in the real world and expect still a bit of waiting… bear with me #milestones #lifechanges #gettingthere
@Pat I imagine a US equivalent would be a Walgreens loyalty card. Boots is the largest British chain chemist (pharmacy in the US).
If anyone discovered how to be a real fan, it’s this Colombian family. They’re now on Spotify
I can be so awkward on the phone trying to explain what I’m phoning for. Well, you’re a removal company so I guess I’m moving? Yup. Can you move me, please? 🤣
No problems expressing my thoughts when I’m furious though, and my English gets so much better as well! #digitalchild #introvert #secondlanguage #communication
I’m watching the ‘where are you really from’-gate with a lot of interest. I have been asked in various contexts, with various intents for as long as I have lived in the UK. I realise I always will. Most people, even if their intentions are perfectly genuine (healthy curiosity), don’t know how uncomfortable this question can make people feel. It places an identity label on us that we might not be aligned with. No one has to identify with the place they were born in or want to have a conversation about it. Sometimes a simple ‘if you don’t mind me asking’ can make a whole lot of difference. And be prepared to just take ‘it’s complicated’ for an answer and move on #whereareyoufrom #whereareyoureallyfrom
@carlam I get asked a lot, because I have a clearly foreign accent. I can’t always tell what the intent is, and a lot of the time the curiosity ends up going a bit too far… I am also prepared to talk about my identity at length but have a standard answer to the initial question that most of the time allows me to test the intent. I still don’t know how to react to outright hostility though.
Dreaming of the “Where are you really from?” moment and me pulling out charts of my family’s origins. Alright, let’s start with Sephardic Jews , work our way to the indigenous communities of Panay and meander through Ilocos via southern China.
I’m from the #Philippines. It’s complicated. I’m happy to answer this question when asked in good faith but I can easily tell the difference between curiosity and hostility.

A lovely French lady selling York Gin at the York station (on learning I consider myself ‘from Edinburgh’): I used to live in Edinburgh! York is lovely, but Edinburgh is special.
I could not agree more. I’ll drink my York Gin to her tonight! #headingbackhome #goinghome

Either Scotland can leave the Union on its own terms, or it's not a Union. Giving England (and therefore the Tories) a permanent veto is undemocratic and unjust. #IndyRef2
Perhaps my cynicism has me delusional but at this point I can't help feeling any obstruction placed in the way of #indyref2 is just going to make scottish independence *more* likely in the long run 🤞🏻
Hottest of hot takes, but two points on #indyref judgment of UK Supreme Court:
1. Court’s observations on non-binding referendums and their de facto effect is interesting given the defects in the 2016 referendum, which were generally brushed aside because the referendum was, well, non-binding.
2. The judgment will do much for a Scottish nationalist argument that Scotland is a prisoner of the union, whatever one’s opinion on the correctness of that argument.
