“...the debates that are going to take shape in the small corner of the internet known as the Fediverse are bound to either create something new and amazing or suffocate a promising baseline for change.” Inspiring helicopter view of the Fediverse migration.

I've tried to capture more thoughts than I could in a Mastodon box. Here's a quick take I sent out to the readers of my mailing list (and RSS feed)...

#introduction

Hi, I'm Tristan.

I've been bumping around the internet industry since the early 1990s. There is record of my being one of the earliest webmaster (among the first 30) when I was in college.

I'm a believer in technology's potential for good. I'm also a realist worried about its potential for not good.

I'm now running a startup helping #non-profit and #government agencies in #human-services

In my spare time, I love #reading #writing and thinking about building a #better-net

My top advice for #twittermigration folks looking to build an audience on #mastodon:
👉 Show up! Fill out your profile (yes you can copy your bio from the bird app) and post a few starter toots with what to expect from you
👉 Hashtags are a great way to find users outside your community. Be specific to your interests too
👉 Engage. Reply to toots!! Go out of your way to find people with mutual interests. Build your bridges while it’s easy
👉 Come back tomorrow

If you want to delete all your old Twitter DMs (which I think is a good idea even if Twitter might retain copies of them somewhere), and also your historical likes, RTs, and any tweets you don’t want to keep, I made a Twitter app for that.
It’s called Semiphemeral and it’s pretty easy to use. I posted instructions for how to do it twitter.com/semiphemeral/statu

Not gonna lie: It's been refreshing to hopescroll more than doomscroll this week.
