When was the last time you took a photo on film?

@levisan I would expect a big spike in the 10+ years ago option from disposable cameras, but we shall see...

@LouisIngenthron a lot of IRL acquaintances I have would say "in the last decade" because of wedding receptions that had disposable cameras at each table

@levisan Wait, they still sell disposable cameras in the age of smartphones?

This is news to me.

@LouisIngenthron Yep! Both classics (Kodak, Fujifilm) and hipster/artsy brands (Ilford, Lomography).

I personally don't get it.

I shoot film on cameras that could arguably take a better photo than any smartphone because of the size of things allowing for tighter depth of field and better lighting. That's part of why I like it; there's some art of the manual control. Similar to the appeal of a DSLR or mirrorless camera but with the added fun of film (and I develop it myself too).

But point-and-shoot cameras from 25 years ago and disposables (which are basically the same thing) don't make sense to me outside of things like wedding reception gimmicks. Smartphones 15 years ago, in the early days of Instagram, could do better. And I doubt the people using them are doing the development themselves either.

@levisan Yeah, the only benefit I can think of is that collecting the cameras from the tables the next morning would be much easier than trying to get all the guests to upload their candid phone pictures to some cloud service for the married couple.
