@MrRooni Thanks. At least the original injury was a bit more badass than tripping over the cat. 😝

What I did not need today: The cat tripping me and sending me injured shoulder-first into the wall before the shoulder specialist even has a chance to examine the original injury.

Binging The Diplomat, eating popcorn too late, changing out my sweaters for t-shirts, planning a productive Sunday of farmers marketing and WWDC prep, and hoping my son is having a good time at prom (and that he makes it home safely).

When I was a kid we used to be afraid of our ball landing on the lawn of the old guy across the street because he’d come out and yell at us. Now kids get shot for that shit.

@agiletortoise Ugh, so sorry to hear it. Hope it’s a mild bout with no lasting effects.

@jeff @dmoser I read it as walk if you can, bike/eBike if you can’t walk, take mass transit if you can’t bike, use ride share or care share if you must drive, and use private car and plane rarely.

TBH, this seems worse than having the road blocked by climate activists for a few minutes.

“That practice of leniency began to change in 1980, with the founding of Mothers Against Drunk Driving by one determined woman, Candy Lightner, who had lost her daughter to a repeat hit-and-run driver. From Fair Oaks, California, MADD spread across the nation. Before it pressured politicians to amend laws, before it persuaded courts and police to enforce those laws, it enabled those reforms by working directly on public attitudes. MADD convinced American drivers that they were not weak or unmanly if they surrendered the car keys after drinking too much. MADD empowered the families and friends of those drivers to insist that the keys be surrendered.

That kind of cultural change beckons now. The mass gun purchases of 2020 and 2021 have put even more millions of weapons into even more hands untrained to use and store those weapons responsibly.”

@starbreaker@indieweb.social I haven't seen it!

I would love to see *all* guns banned. I would. But we can certainly start by banning the ones that can kill so very many people so very, very quickly, so a mental health crisis doesn't become a massacre.

It's probably always been the case that a few folks who set out to commit suicide by cop try to take as many others with them as possible before dying themselves... but it's only in the last few years or so that we've made it *so. fucking. easy.*

I've been thinking about her lately because [a] it probably should have been social workers/a mental health crisis team that responded, and [b] suicide by cop happens so regularly now that I bet everyone knows the term.

I've been thinking a lot about a former hockey teammate lately. She died in... 2005? It was a "suicide by cop," as someone explained to me—a term I'd never heard before. Apparently she'd locked herself in a closet with a gun, police responded, she shot through the door at them, and they fired back, killing her.
