My almost 13 year old daughter had a good idea. We’ve been talking about doing a podcast together - mostly for us to have.
Her idea was reviewing books that are being taken out of school libraries - discussing the content, reviewing the actual literature but also the reasons it was banned and our thoughts there as well.
This is something I think that we will do, soon.
The Mormon Church is being fined 5 million because it hid a 32 billion dollar investment fund. This was not accidental. The SEC proved that both the investment firm and church went to great lengths to knowingly hide these assets. For the folks playing along at home, that’s a fine of 0.016% on the investment. Imagine lying on your taxes and you hid an extra $100K offshore and the IRS said “No sweat, pay us $15.63.” If there are no other repercussions, that’s not a fine, that’s encouragement.
This will upset some, but it needs to be said.
People keep asking when the right will wake up and denounce their worst reactionaries.
It’s not same scale, but progressives have a similar challenge. When will we stop letting our most reactive, anonymous people define us?
I’m a progressive. So much so, I ran for congress on universal health care, working class economics, addressing structural racism, and legalized marijuana and sex work.
The difference isn’t in our ideals, it’s in our behavior
This is HUGE.
"The National Labor Relations Board ruled Tuesday that employers can no longer demand laid-off employees avoid publicly disparaging the company as part of their severance agreements, nor can they stop affected employees from disclosing the terms of their exit packages. Doing so, the federal agency determined, would be a violation of the laid-off employees’ rights under the National Labor Relations Act."
Public transport isn't supposed to make money. It's not even supposed to break even. It's supposed to lose money and to be financed and extended from general taxes because it gives back way more than mere money.
And all the politicians know this because they keep building and maintaining streets for free
Malcolm X was assassinated 58 years ago today. This remains as one of my favorite pieces of wisdom he shared. And now, they're making it illegal to even claim the knife is there.
"If you stick a knife in my back nine inches and pull it out six inches, there's no progress. If you pull it all the way out that's not progress. Progress is healing the wound that the blow made. And they haven't even pulled the knife out much less heal the wound. They won't even admit the knife is there." — Malcolm X
Swift 5.8 has a new implementation of result builder type checking that greatly improves compile-time performance, code completion results, and diagnostics by using the extended multi-statement closure inference infrastructure introduced in Swift 5.7.

"For many people cars are the essence of liberty; for others, they’re an imposition that takes the form of a slow bus, dirty air, dangerous streets, a diminished public sphere, a honking traffic jam, and a melting planet."
Spanish lawmakers on Thursday gave final approval to a law granting paid medical leave to women suffering severe period pain, becoming the first European country to advance such legislation.
Lawmakers also approved a law letting anyone 16 and over change the gender on their ID card. The law makes Spain one of the few nations to allow people to change their gender on their national identity card with a simple declaration.
Update on the Mountain View Solidarity Fund, which has been using its connections in the community to find people who need aid but who haven’t previously tried to obtain it.
They distributed their first round of funding, and acquired a second round of funding, and are now taking applications from people in need.
“The Solidarity Fund also distinguished itself from other aid programs by giving recipients full autonomy to spend the money in whatever way they need.”
It's located at Oaklandia Cafe x Bakery on 12th and Clay in Oakland, CA 94607 open Monday to Friday from 7am to 6PM.

@ellenor2000 @DrTCombs Yes, of sorts. Even now, the choice is lacking.
It's no longer an issue for me as we went #CarFree as a family last year. I have a #TUV, which stands for Tern Utility Vehicle 😉

If we need a car, we use a #CarShare program which means either a Prius hybrid or a Kia Rio, both of which are reasonable for fuel efficiency.
Best of all, we save around $200/month (CDN) not owning a vehicle! #GoCarFree
SUV vs TUV* for picking up groceries 🚲
I had more on my bike than the driver put in their trunk.

The next time you use any navigation device, software or Google Maps thank Dr. Gladys West. Her contributions to the mathematical modeling of the shape of Earth, and her work on the development of the satellite models that were eventually incorporated into the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. #BlackMastodon #BlackHistoryMonth
