Is it possible (or even likely) that our universe is made up of infinite abstractions layers? Perhaps we as humans drive ourselves to madness looking for the smallest object, but there is always one smaller.

It's called perpetual rendering. It's a theory, but not testable unless you can break for the 4th wall- and many have tried.
