Still not clear about the Use Cases... And whether 5G is relevant when most of us work from home... 🤔

businesstimes.com.sg/technolog

@lupyuen supposedly IOT, but i don't really see a must-have use-case which isn't covered by wifi (appliances), 4G (agricultural) or industrial (4G/wifi)..

@bonifartius I think 5G is targeted for street cameras with facial recognition. You agree? 😉

@lupyuen i haven't really thought about that. maybe then they finally have a reason for widespread camera rollout: "now that we have this fine 5G network, we've gotta use it!!1" :)

@bonifartius I'm probably crazy to say this... Maybe China created the demand for 5G because of facial recognition cameras? And now that we are all masked up... How will we sustain 5G? 🤔

@lupyuen but nobody buys their 5G equipment anymore out of fearing espionage, as if the other countries which produce such things (i don't know if any but the USA are left) would spy less 😁

i'm not sure if the demand for 5G is fabricated by china, since a few years ago politicians in europe were/are hyped for anything that gives them an edge over the dominance of the USA, including IOT, blockchain, really anything "cyber" 😉

@bonifartius I think that 5G hype died down when people realised that IoT isn't doing so well. Some telcos have already terminated their NB-IoT networks

@lupyuen to be honest, i'd rather see them finally deploying enough 4G so that i'll have coverage everywhere instead of investing in the next thing, but it's such an oglyopoly here they really don't have a reason to invest anything 🤷 that 3G is phased out meanwhile just means that there is either 4G service or 2G, which isn't really cutting it anymore 😛

regarding the politicians, they are still aboard the 5G hype-train i fear 🙂

@bonifartius Exactly! Such a shame that NB-IoT was never used to it's full potential... And I have another crazy theory: Politicians benefit from 5G because of the camera surveillance they will get. Maybe burning the 5G Base Stations wasn't a bad idea after all 😉

@bonifartius Interesting prediction posted by someone from China: 5G will fail because it's odd numbered. The successful ones are even numbered (2G, 4G) because people learn from the earlier failures 😀

@bonifartius so it's like the star trek movie curse! 😀

i think that narrowband technologies are really underappreciated, but maybe that's a result of the current way software is developed. size & speed optimization don't matter most of the time as the hardware is fast and cheap enough.
