It looks like you can sign into different servers and create accounts in different servers? How does this work?
@a7 Thanks! Makes sense
@manjuggm One account is generally good enough to get in touch with people from other servers.
Just like you can email somebody from Outlook.com with your Gmail.com email address. :)
There are a few exceptions (like servers blocking each other), but Qoto does not block servers by default so we are one of the most connected servers around.
Welcome to Qoto and the Fediverse!
@trinsec Thank you!
It looks like different servers have different rules.. Like this one has a bigger character limit for toots, can invite people, there are announcements, a Journal, circles etc..that seems pretty cool!
@manjuggm Indeed! And we're very relaxed around here in general so long you respect the other users. :)
I joined years ago largely for the features this server has to offer, and I've never regretted it. ;)
@trinsec Thanks! Good to know.
@trinsec I found this article on Twitter.. https://gizmodo.com/how-to-join-mastodon-twitter-alternative-elon-musk-1849739031
Does this seem accurate?
Thanks!!
@manjuggm Quite a long read, but it's fairly good. Seems accurate enough to me.
It doesn't take into account that various instances can have modifications. So we have quote-toots on Qoto, but the default Mastodon doesn't have that.
I can see the dunking issue, but since we're a STEM oriented instance, our quote-toot usually is used for displaying other interesting scientific stuff I've noticed.
@trinsec Thank you!! Didn't know quote tooting was available here..
@manjuggm@qoto.org think of it like email, a bunch of servers speak the same protocol and send messages to each other, im sending a message from my own personal server
